It seems that the only way my traps will get any bigger is if I use extremely heavy wieght.
I use a str8 bar and load it up with 450-500 lbs and to that for 3x10, but I would like to be able to hit them from a new angle, and try to throw them into a new range of growth.

I have tried super setting them with dumbells, and as odd as it sounds this fucking gym at the great university of southern mississippi only has the 100lb baby rattles (dumbells), and that is not nearly enough for me to get a good burn.

So if anyone has any ideas please share and I will do it.

Very high inclined bench. Lie on it face down with the BB below it and shrug at a 45+ degree angle.
Shrugs with the bar behind your back.
Shrugs on the standing calf machine using the shoulders with your hands by your sides.
Half upright rows on the smith, concentrating on the traps.

TxRugby, just because you probably can't bench your own weight does not mean that there aren't some strong guys out there....500 lb shrugs is nothing ridiculous, and a guy who can handle that would get nothing out of 100 lb dumbells.....a good thing to try is shrugs with a diamond bar....or try doing them from behind on a smith machine....it's easier for me on a smith because my ass is to big and the free weight bar won't go over it...the smith machine allows me to angle myself better...these help if u are looking for a little change, I know str8 bar shrugs get boring quick.

Try not training them at all. They will grow indirectly from Deadlift, Presses etc...

Steelheart has a good point....I personally have always felt better training my traps directly, but I know some guys with freakish traps up to their ears who never did a friggen shrug in their life....If you have good genetics for building traps Deads and presses and cleans and indirect work will probably be all you need to get them to grow. On the other hand, if traps are a weak point, direct work will probably be more beneficial.

For me it seems that my traps get a better workout from doing heavy deadlifts than shrugs.

This used to kill my traps, Drop the weight big time, shrug it 10 times, than do upright rows past ur nose, or atleast up to ur nose or chin, or lips, on the smith machine, raise the bad boy up with good form, than shrug it again afterwards if u do it right...ur traps will hate u for it, cause it kills them and burns them like crazy, my traps have grown like crazy since i started this...got the idea from a huge mufa, It kills them believe me. Shrug hard, and hold it for about 2 or 3 seconds, And do the rows hard, and use strict form you'll be burning like a bitch by the time ur done, total of 30 reps, shrugs, upright rows to ur chin, than shrugs again, Enjoy!

I agree with the use of a diamond bar. I purchased one about two months ago and it hits my traps a lot better than a straight bar or dumbells. Traps grow from heavy wieght, however, if your not bringing your shoulders up to your ear level your wasting your time. I'm not saying you do shrugs incorrectly, but I have seen guys in my gym doing 375-450lbs and barely moving anything but their arms.

Yeah, I got a question here: What do you all think of upright rows with the dumbells? Should i keep them parallel to the ground or let them angle a bit as I bring them up? I only ask because I feel a bit of strain in my shoulders if I try to keep them too parallel, or if I use a barbell.

I agree about the deadlifts...I only do upright row occasionally as they are potentially bad on the shoulders.

Have you ever tried breathing shrugs? I did and they worked great. It gives you a new angle. Check out the article at t-mag.
