I have always done chest only once per week in the past, but now my new workout partner/roommate is telling me that I SHOULD be hitting chest twice per week, and that working it out a second time will burn out the lactic acids in my sore muscles. This sounds ludicrous to me. But since I am always trying to keep an open mind I wanted to ask if there is any truth to this. I have always thought that if it is still sore, its still repairing itself, and that if I lift when a muscle is sore, I will just end up burning off that muscle and shrinking it. Could one of you knowledgeable bro's please enlighten me on this?

No this is not a good idea, its better to undertrain then overtrain.. You might however train it twice a week like once a month to really blast it, but i wouldnt recommend doing it every week. Try to at least keep a 6 or 7 day gap. IF you train hard enough it shouldnt be a problem. I only train chest twice a week when im on a cycle... ------------------

Go with your original thoughts on this one. If you are still sore, you are still recovering and growing, so training again will only damage you and result in overtraining. I dont know where you friend got his burning out lactic acid theory, but it just doesnt work like that.

The bottom line is that if a bodypart is sore, it has not recovered and should not be trained. The only thing that will flush out lactic acid is H20, good nutrition and proper rest.

I agree wait until the soreness is gone - it is still recovering.

It would also depend on what type of soreness you have. If the chest feels sore when your not moving I wouldn't train it. If you have to stretch your chest with your arms before you feel any soreness it's probably ok to train.
