I few of my friends in the gym don't like to do decline bench. They say it really doesn't improve the look of your pecs. Are they correct or not? I mean what does the declince bench do as far appearance?

I don't bother with decline bench. A pec is a pec. I don't buy into this "lower pecs outer pecs inner pecs middle pecs" stuff. Do an exercise that works as much of your chest as possible and your chest will grow. Plain and simple. -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!!

I saw some new progress when I implemented declines into my routine. I think it is useful just because it is a compound movement where a lot of muscles are recruited. Plus I also think it is a useful variation when your workout is getting stale. You know maybe one or two weeks use it in place of a bench press.

Did declines for about 4 months and it didn't do anything for me. Got nothing good to say about this exercise other than you can go quite heavy.

I've found that for the best size and shape gains, inclines are the most important. That being with both bar and dumbbells. when your doing it with dumbbells, you've REALLY got to concentrat on the squeeze together at the top. ------------------

I usually start my chest traning with about 4-5 sets of decline dumbell presses for warming up without exhausting the shoulders or triceps , then i usually train to failure in incline presses

i beleive that the decline bench press is useful, due to the fact that more weight can be added than the flat/incline press;and we all know the heavier you lift and overload the muscle, the better your chances of growing.although,i find that this is a great exercise,i prefer to mix it up a little w/ weighted dips.i prefer dips because of the stretch at the bottom of the movement;once you add considerable weight(3-4 plates) to the dip exercise, you'll notice an almost immediate fullness to your chest.that's what i noticed.the bottom line?combine declines w/ dips...they go good together.fyi. ------------------

I very rarely include declines in a workout, but they can be of use for variation and a different feel. Although I like to do inclines, I think this thing about focusing on different areas and angles is over emphasised. Think about doing a set of flat bench to absolute failure, then adding forced reps or a drop set, giving it everything youve got. If you are working to this intensity, are you telling me that every muscle fibre in your chest is not going to be stimulated to try to get the bar up? Your body will recruit every muscle available, even your back will be involved if you dont concentrate on keeping strict form. Im pretty sure that lower, upper, inner, outer, or any other region of the chest will be stimulated.

Like said above, its good for variation but it shouldnt be ur bread and butter. If your working with shoulders with chest, you might want to incorporate it because it sends to isolate the chest and not work the shoulders as much so you will have energy left for more shoulder exercises. ------------------

Well right now I could only do decline. Any other bench produces too much pain on my shoulders. |
