I heard that the 100% daily value of iron in Centrum is actually bad for young males because we already should be getting enough iron from meals. The extra iron increases the hemoglobin levels. Is there any truth to this? What multivitamins are every one else taking out there? I'm not talking about protein supplements - just vitamins and multivitamins.

i am pretty sure it is not as bad as they want you to believe,we all know the RDA already has the lowest intakes as their 100%,and im guessing just like the FDA when the RDA feels the sligtest amount of heat, even if their is very little evidence to back it up they will still lower it,iknow theirs a warning saying iron containing products are one of the leading causes of death in toddlers,or something like that, but that is for toddlers not teenagers,i think ,for example if the mom leaves them on the floor an the kid eats it likes it candy,i am not sure of all of this, but if i were u i wouldnt worry about it,oh yea also i hope it is not bad because i take approx 400% per day (3 metrx protein bars,1 muiltvitamin),then plus food,so maybe even more, some days i have 4 bars [This message has been edited by chillin408 (edited February 04, 2001).] [This message has been edited by chillin408 (edited February 04, 2001).]

i have heard that iron is antagonistic to zinc, so if you eat more iron, less zinc is absorbed. i guess it dependson how much red meat/meat/iron rich vegtables (e.g. cabbage) you getting. if your quite young and it was that bad for you then they would probably state it on the label (they do here for young kids-not teens). as far as i know most people only supplement if not young. i munch superdrug vitamins. didn't take centrum because the superdrug one has the same stuff minus tin and another metal i don't think we really need.

1 a day multis are crap. Many vitamins and minerals only stay in the body briefly (such as vitC) so you should take vitamins throughout the day. Get a good book like the Vitamin Bible or Ultimate Nutrition. This is too complex a subject for me to answer in one post. |
