Hi,

I'm about to start working out again after a 4 year layoff. I had a hip replaced and lost ambition to work out but am ready to start again. The problem is that I used to rely on Deadlifts and Squats as primary building exercises and can't do them now. I can only think of leg extensions and leg curls for the legs. Am I doomed to these 2 exercises or are there any others that won't put pressure on the hip joint?

I'm sorry to hear about your hip replacement. There aren't too many leg exercises that keep the stress off of your hips. Can you do Body-Weight-Squats? If you can't, I recommend just sticking with leg extensions and leg curls. Also do two cardio sessions a week, try to use machines that won't bother your hips. Stationary bikes, treadmills (slow paced walking, or fast), stair climbing, elliptical machines (these are great) and rowing machines (might put some stress on your hips). You should also do a 20 minute full body stretch session at least twice a week and no more than four times a week. That may help your hip. Try to find some hip flexor stretches. What can you and can't you do? How hard is it to walk or run? Can you jog? I just don't know how bad your condition is. If it's really bad, I recommend seeing a Physical Therapist.

I'd vary the leg extentions as much as possible ie. toes out/in and single/double. How about half squats?
