Ineed help, I worked out BACK yesturday morning I left the gym everything was fine, i took a nap and woke up by the end of the day my shoulder was killing me. The medial head was sore as hell I cant even raise my arm over my head. I need some rehab advice, I want to get back to working out as soon as possible. Ive been lifting for 10yrs, never had a problem. This totally sucks. It hurts like a mother......

beleive me when i tell you i sympathize;unfortunatelly, based on your description of your shoulder injury,i beleive you have a rotator cuff injury.anytime you raise your arm above your head,it hurts like mother, right?my advice to you is to go have it checked out immediatelly by a qualified physiotherapist.i know yyou don't want to hear this, but stop training all upper body.this injury affects every single upper body movement.let me know how you physio goes...hope you take my advice...i've been through a long recup period because i didn't listen and wanted to train anyways.good luck.

Listen to big thinker, I am currently doing rehab. I didn't realise how fucked up my shoulders until I got physio. Don't ignore it.

I can't agree with the others enough here. Ice it, rest it and get some help. Massage may help later.

I injured my rotator cuff and did not take this advice. It basically put me out for over a year because I was to keen to get back to the gym and kept aggravating it. Think about the long term.

On a positive note, it will heal, and strength will return quickly once its fixed.

ok, i think that i have a rotator cuff injury also. i've ignored it for almost 2 years now. i've tried to train my rotators in hopes that it would go away. every time i do a heavy pressing movement such as flat or incline Bench press, it hurts. i find myself putting the next set off a bit longer than i should because i'm waiting for the pain in my shoulder to go away even though my chest is ready for the next set. what do you guys think? does it sound like a rotator injury? what type of specialist should i be looking for to treat this?

ATP - Where can you feel the pain? For me it was like it was deep within the shoulder, so that it was difficult to pinpoint. No matter how much I massaged around the front delt I could never really hit it.

If youre training in pain there is definitely something wrong. Try to find a good sports physio and go from there. I had massage and acupuncture and basically did no chest / shoulder work for about two months to rest it, then started slowly with the rotator cuff isolation stuff.

You will feel shit not training, but Im sure you realise now that if you had of rested the injury in the first place you would now have been injury free for something like the past 18 months.

ATP-your injury sounds exactly like mine...i would feel this pinch, especially when doing flat bench presses.go see a physio and once your back into the training groove, make sure you train your rotator cuff for all upper body movements to avoid this "ego blasting" injury.all my upper body exercises took a beting as far as poundages are concerned...breaks the ego!!!not anymore though...i smartened up...do the same!

FatRat,
yep, the pain is deep within the joint. no massaging makes it go away. i think i'm so used to ignoring it that i don't even notice that i'm in pain sometimes. it kind of aches right now actually, but guess what today is....shoulder day!! hehe. i know, i know, i need to see a specialist about this. i'm not sure i could handle to stop lifting. i guess if the doc told me to take a couple months off from upper body training i might.....well, who am i kidding...i probably wouldn't stop training unless i was forced to by an injury.
i've got another question for you guys....do any of you experience a shooting numbness through your arm during heavy sets of Squats or Bent Over Rows? i get this sometimes but it only seems to happen during those lifts and it's in the arm that has the shoulder injury.

i blew out my shoulder playing football. just had surgery on friday. go see a doctor. if you plan on lifting soon there is a new technique that the doctors can do instead of cutting your shoulder in half. they can take "lazers" and heat up your rotator cuff. you probably have made your shoulder unstable...which means the cap is too loose now, or it has torn. back to the lazers. they heat up the cap and the cap shrinks back around the joint. it doesnt take very long in some cases for it to heal 2weeks. get it done now and dont put up with all kinds of pain all the time later.

ATP I understand that you dont want to stop lifting believe me! However, you have said that it has been two years now, and still no sign of recovery, that should tell you something bro. Just think where you would be today if you got this fixed back when it occurred and you where able to train full bore since then. Still, its up to you man.

And now you are talking about shooting pains? This could be caused by instability in the joint, like rick said, which may be impinging a nerve. I dont know anything about the laser thing Rick is talking about but it sounds all good.

After you recover, I suggest to do some rotator cuff training. It will help you stay injury free. I recommend doing some L-flys when you fully recover. Take care and I'm sorry for what has happened. Please keep us updated.

It may not even be due to training. Like you said you took a nap. Did you lie on it awkwardly or sleep in a draught?
