When i was in the gym yesterday, i saw a dude doing wide grip barbell curls,i mean his grip was as wide as the bar would let him go,since he is a friend i went and asked him, why such a wide grip?, he said to work the out side of the bicep. I always thought that close grip curls did that.is he right ?

in my opinion,bb curls stimulate the overall biceps area,no matter what kind of grip.you can't isolate a specific area w/ bb curls...it works all of the biceps muscle!the grip you choose to use, must come naturally for you to avoid any wrist or elbow pain, especially when going heavy!!!fyi.

biceps have two heads, yet if one contracts so does the other right. putting that wide of a grip accomplishes nothing, it puts stress on the wrists.

do hammers for the outside bicep if anything. pick a movement and do it how it is supposed to be done.

I do mine with a fairly narrow grip. Try to keep them shoulder width IMO. I have recently switched to doing rev bar curls because my elbows really hurt from doing them.

Standard grip barbell curls seem to work fine for me, although I do not train for size or definition only strength.

The grip should never be too wide or too narrow because you will not acheive great results that way.

"grip was as wide as the bar would let him go"? hmmmm, sounds like he's prone for injury. I've never done this nor would I go as wide as the bar would let me. You can vary your grip somewhat to hit your biceps from different angels w/o putting yourself at risk.

If you hold a straight bar just wider that shoulder length you will simulate (to some degree) the "wrists out" movement you try to get with dumbbell curls. This works your bicep a little differently-----too wide and you de-emphasize the bicep.

Wide barbell curls gave me good results when I tired it , followed by peracher curls and concentration curls , although it caused some pain in my forearms , but the gains were impressive .

It will work the inner head more not the outer. Too wide will put stress on the wrists though, unless you use an ez bar where the grip is angled.

I noticed in lots of training tips that twisting the wrists outwards helps to add more concentration to the biceps and upper forearms , therefor i use wide grip , slighty wider than shoulder width to achive better concentration , but i would never use EZ bar for that

I once saw a man at the gym training and he did a few sets of narrow grip barbell curls first. I mean so narrow that his hands were touching each other almost. He had some of the largest arms i've ever seen. I don't remember him doing wide grip barbell curls and I've never seen anyone else do them.

I was also under the impression that wide grip would target the inner bicep and close grip would target the outer bicep.

just like on a concentration curl, you are twisting your wrist outward at the top and squeeze.

no?

a curl is a curl. biceps are very uncomplicated. a wide grip shortens the arc of movment so the reps will be easier (unless it puts you at a "mechanical" disadvantage)

a set of normal BB curls done to *maximum intensity will stimulate as much muscle fiber in the muscle that the CNS will allow. there really is no need to be "fancy" and "inventive" when it comes to bicep training. honestly I feel that my best bicep movements are chinups and cable rows.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
