What position are you talking about. If its for every one on the field, I think that's one of the stupidest rules I've ever heard. I hate to say this (because I was a kicker in high school), but is he going to make your kicker bench that too. I'm willing to bet that he can't do 225. If your fast enough, tough enough and play the position better than someone else, I think you should play. Tell your coach to stick that rule up is ass! ------------------

It's already been said, but I've gotta say it again. YOUR COACH IS A DIPSHIT! That's like saying everybody on JV basketball needs to be able to touch the rim before they can play varsity. I bet you're really fucking some kick-ass point guards that way. Not everbody on a football team needs great upper body strength. Regardless, you're probabaly not going to get this geezer to change his rules, so stay HEAVY. From now until it's time for you to be "tested" or whatever I would go 4 sets of 6-8 heavy flat bench with one warmup set. You're balls are against a wall, so screw this "chest on Monday" crap. Wait 5 days or so and hit it hard again. Seriously cut back on your other lifts or quit them altogether while you're doing this. Cut back or quit any cardio you may be doing. Eat like a man possessed! Suck down every gram of protein you get your hands on and don't skimp on carbs or fat either. This dumbass coach is gonna end up with a bunch of kick-ass bench pressers instead of good football players. Work hard and good luck! ------------------

Your coach is an idiot. Even if there was a strength requirment (which there shouldn't be), it should be relative to bodyweight...not to mention involve a more applicable lift (i.e, power clean). Yes, if you get fat and specialize in bench, you have enough time to get to 225. Will this make you a better football player? No. What you could do is write Fred Hatfield (Dr. Squat) who is an authority on resistance training for sports (Trained Holyfield, Alzado, etc.) He will gladly e-mail your coach a well worded and scientific response. Hatfield's website is http://www.drsquat.com/index.htm

OK...I think that I have it figured out. Your coach is doing the right thing. Coaches are just that...coaches. There is more to the mind in a game than anything else. He needed to give all the players a reason to kill themselves in the gym in the offseason. If he just said "yeah, you guys need to be a little stronger by next season"...then most everyone would just sit around with their thumb up their butt. You are concerned and are already working towards that goal. Right now you are working to meet a goal that you find non-achievable. He wants you to work...so you are working. He wants all the players who want to be on the Varsity team...to really work hard. Just setting a standard...for those who work hard. Work hard and your coach will notice. B True

thats the stupidest rule ive ever heard, but i know alot of coaches say shit like that, but i think most of them just say that but when it comes down to it in august they dont care,i think they just say as an attempt to motivate you or maybe not? if not and u fail to bench 225 and he wont let u on the team ,maybe u should consider switching schools, unless if u'd rather stay at the same school and take the season off i use to do 8-10 reps with a weight, then once i can do it 10 times increase the weight, but always i did it at least 8 times,im talking about first set only, this worked for me,but it might not for u,just making a suggestion,no matter one program u do the key is to stay consistent and not to miss any workouts

Eagledude, I graduated from highschool a couple of years ago, and I was an all- area linebacker and running back. My coach was just inducted into the hall of fame and he motivated us the same way yours is...through fear and disapline. If you bust ass in the weightroom and show your coach the effort your putting out, he might act mad or sit you a day because of the rule, but if he is truly a good coach than you will get more than your fair share of chances to make varsity a week later.

welcome to the "pressures" of sports my friend!but stop wasting time thinking of what a dick your caoch is and start producing.even though this will be one tough battle, imagine the rewards!picture your confidence level when achieving such a goal.i had the same goal as you a few years back...i sucked when it came to benching...@ 180 lbs,i was lifting 165lbs x 8 reps.i used a compound exercise routine given to me a by a soccer coach while i was in greece!you might think this is a lil' weird but try it! routine scheme: ------------------
