I train almost exactly how dorian does in "blood and guts" pyramiding is very important to me. I only go to failure on the last two sets.

There is no scientific evidence that you have to train to "failure" to stimulate growth. You do have to provide adequate intensity for this process to occur, and the additional volume can enhance other aspects of hypertrophy, such as vascularization, glycogen/fluid retention, etc. Personally, I train to positive failure on some sets during each workout but almost never include forced reps or negatives. Most sets probably terminated 1-2 reps prior to failure. I've tried HIT, but didn't work for me. But my theories are a little different anyway, as I often train the same bodypart on successive days using different repetition schemes.
