To work your hamstrings...do a stiff-legged deadlift, not a deadlift.

b fold the truth is exactly right. If you really want to build hams, do them straight legged. If you find them very difficult, start out with lighter weights, and build from there. When you start to get your weights up, straps can be helpful so you can focus on your form, and not focus on dropping the bar.

I remember when I first started doing deadlifts, I had the same reaction. Lower back was killing me. Then, I switched to stiff legged, because I wanted to build hams.

I used to be able to do stiff-legged deadlifts, but my lower back is so messed up at the age of 20, I cannot do them anymore

Stiff leg deads. Push the stomach and chest forwards so that the lower back curves back not forwards, to prevent stress on it. Only go to the floor if you are supple enough (using a bar height of an average 20kg plate's radius).
Ie. if you can put your hands flat on the floor with the legs straight, if you cannot, place the bar on blocks.

I have just started doing deadlifts about a month ago. It is by far my most favorite exersize. There's no feeling like the one you get right after a good set of deads. I can't wait till Saturday thats when I have my back day again lol.

do your stiff legged deads on a step or a bench, hold the bar about shoulder width or even a little tighter, bend the knees slightly and go as deep as you can, you'll feel it big time
p.s. let me know how it goes

Heavy dumbells work great for stiff leg deads. It lets you get down low to the floor without having to stand on a box. When standing up, stop before you are perfectly straight. This keeps tension on the hams all of the time.
