Breathing while lifting is unconcious for me. Inhaling deeping during the negative and forcefully exhaling on the concentric motion.

however when I do laterals and rowing movements (not pulldowns, chinups) I inhale in the concentric part of the lift because it expands the rib cage and feels much more natural. does anyone else do this?

Hey, been messing with some breathing techniques on bench press lately. Worked well for me so far. Could you walk me through how you manage your breathing from when you place your hands on the bar to the end of the movement. Much appreciated man...I can use the help.

Ohhh, I also switch my breathing a little on other movements. When I go extremely heavy I tend just to black out and not remember what I do on them though.

For bench press I usually take in a deep breath on the way down and forcefully exhale on the way up, my breath is out of my lungs when the bar is at the peak. I always breath out the hardest and the strongest at my usual sticking point.

during squats I do the same thing but I add one huge inhale/exhale at the top. If you've ever seen Pumping Iron Ed Corney does the same thing. starting the lift: one big breath... inhale deep on the way down, forcefully exhale and grunt on the way up, at the top grab a large breath of air exhale it, then descend again while deeply inhaling, and again exhale forcefully and grunt on the way up.

now on some movements like the ones I described earlier. I will use laterals for example: I inhale on the concentric motion as to expand the rib cage while simultaneously bringing the arms up.

does this answer your question? I can be more specific if need be.

Hey Valdez I do the same thing. Like you said, just seems/feels more natural. I doubt it could be detrimental.
