what do you guys think of them? i know squats are better. my legs aren't small, and i'm not very interested in gettin them a lot bigger. it's hard for me to do squats, cause i don't have a spotter, and i have to keep the wait down so i can manage to get the last one out without falling over. should i keep doing the squats or switch to a leg press machine where i can add a lot more weight. thanks.

i try to take each day one at a time. but lately several days have been attacking me all at once

I use squats. The squat racks at the gym have failure bars or whatever so I don't have to worry about it. I like leg presses too. Squats are probably better though.

I think squats are a better overall exercise, because it builds core strength and will help you in all areas of BB. However, I don't do them without a spotter for safety reasons. In fact, I got stuck not being able to get up out of a squat position due to failure and I was glad I had a spotter, or it could have been ugly. Made me a little nervous, but I went right back to it next leg workout.

That being said, you may want to try the Smith Machine as mentioned by garza. I used to always use that machine but now I prefer free standing. It just feels more natural.

As far as leg press machines. They're excellent for developing quads also, be sure your stance is wide enough to avoid injury to the knees, and try to push through the heels and it will recruit the quad. One disadvantage of leg press is the amount of weight you need to use to get the same leg benefit as squats. Approximately 2 to 1. If you're squatting 315 free standing. You'll need about six plates on each side to get the same equivalent, give or take a couple. 405 for 9 plates. It's time consuming and it uses a lot of plates, but the decision is yours. You could always do higher reps with lower weights. I haven't used that machine in over 6 months, because I'm trying to get my squats up, and build core strength. Squats, deads, and bench rule!

Good luck!

Squats are the only way to go. I work out in my garage and my only choices for quads are leg exts and squats. I use leg exts to warm up my knees, especially since it is below zero outside, then I do squats. Have 30" quads.

email me if you need any other help

I usually switch off doing squats and leg presses. For example, one week I'll do heavy squats and the next I'll do Leg Presses. I do Squats and Deadlifts in my routines, so by having one week away from squats my lower back doesn't get stressed as much. Example of my switch off routine.

Workout 1
Squats*
Incline Bench Press
Lat Pulldown
Hammer Strength Seated Rows
AB WORK

Workout 2
SLDL
Military Barbell Press
Barbell Shrugs
ROTATOR WORK
GRIP WORK
CALF WORK

* Alternate to Leg Presses

I gotta agree with hotbod on this one. Squats are the king of leg excercises. Leg presses are OK but nowhere near as effective. I'd only do them as an additional set at the end or if I had injuries that prevented me from squatting.
