Training to get bigger has been very well documented. Lift weights eat right and plenty of rest and your muscles will grow. But how would you train for speed. Like the speed you would need to be a boxer or marital artist. Does anyone have experience with this?

It would be done in a way silimar to that of football players. training with explosive movements. explosive on the positive part of the lift and controlled on the way down. you also want the peak of the movement to be controlled. look up a gymnasts workout on the internet, they train for speed, endurance and strength. (everything you want). ------------------ quote:

when you say gymnast, i assume you mean 'power' gymnast rather than 'rhythmic' gymnast - where would a good place to start looking be? the science of effective weight training for boxing & martial arts seems to be rather underdeveloped... ------------------

plyo can be pretty brutal if you are training correctly. treat it like a full body strength training work out. train the whole body take a day off/train again. Get the idea. Kind of a trade off. one week or two weeks on the weights/one week for plyo. That's pretty common training. Another is Full body plyo/one day rest/plyo/rest/lower body weights/upper body weights/rest/start over.(6-day split). ------------------

I usually keep my lifting for power and use speed drills outside of the gym to keep up my speed. I have friends that train with explosive movements and lighter weights to develop speed, but I've become to absorbed in the world of lifting and have to lift heavy all the time. ------------------

I have trained in MA for over 15 years. The things that helped me gain speed were exercises like squats, bench press, and deadlifts. Strong calf work too. Stick with basic movements. I honestly believet that building speed in Martial Arts requres speed practice in Martial Arts. Constantly sparr the fastest person in the center. Push yourself in the ring to be as fast as humanly possible. Sparr 2 or 3 people at a time. Drill every punch and kick into the ground with speed...work on power seperatly. Drop me an email if you need any other ideas. B True

in the past i never did upper body plyometrics, only lower body. I feared that it would screw up my upper body workouts if i did upper body too does upper body plyometrics help alot with running speed?? will i be cheating myself if i dont do them? |
