Personal preference:

Inclines- D.B.'s
Flat- BB

Don't know why, it just feels more comfortable this way.

It is my opinion that you will grow better from a barbell. You can handle more weight and can work closer to failure. Barbells always produce more muscle because you can use more weight with the exercise. In order to get more out of a dumbell, you would have to go probably too heavy to even consider possible with a dumbell. my 2 cents.

I always use dumbells because you don't need a spotter and it feels like you can get a better stretch. Also when you're doing the bench press with a barbell everyone around tends to look to see how much you can lift. Its very easy to get tempted into putting on the big weights and going for some ego presses just to show off to the people looking but usually in order to do that you end up breaking form. With the dumbells no one even watches and its a lot harder to break form no matter how heavy you go.

Dumbells provide a much better range of motion along with less restriction...when going heavy though, stick with Barbells...but when doing either, you should have a spotter...no need in a senseless injuries. if you are hurt, neither DB's or BB's will do you any good...

The reality is that most recreational BB's are to lazy to adhere to a strict dumbell workout. Why? Simply, dumbells are much harder than barbell work. Dumbells especially when done heavy require 2nd and 3rd tier muscles that are not used during barbell work. Dumbells will shape the muscles better because of "RANGE OF MOTION". A large part of Body uilding is the stretch. Dumbells cause the muscles to "tear" to a greater degree. Tearing is what you want. Similar to a calous, the more you tear it and rebuild, the stronger it gets.

Dumbells are better for me. I can hit my chest much better then with a BB.
