It depends on how old you are also. Men in their 30's and 40's have naturally higher bodyfat percentages even though it may not be visible. It's hard to keep growing if your bf% is less than 8-10%. Although definition and muscle tone is great at lower levels. I wouldn't say never go above 12%. 12% is considered lean according to the charts if your 36+ years old. If you're planning on growing, you'll get your strength and size up also by increasing weight and bodyfat somewhat. You can always cut once you get bigger. Many young people (25 and under)end up opting of AS because they don't think they can get any bigger, when in most cases they just should be eating more. As you know, food is the most anabolic substance you can take when you're young because test levels are already high. BTW, definitely not a slam against AS, that's a personal choice. | ||

Personally, I like to stay between 5% bf and 8% year round. I don't quite make the bigger gains that I could make if I really jacked up my daily caloric intake, but I feel much better in this range and I look much better too. If I was planning on competing (I'm not sure if that is your objective or not), I would allow myself a higher bf% in the offseason and cut back on my cardio. The optimal bf% range for a purely anabolic state without outrageous lipogenesis (bodyfat accumulation) is going to be predetermined, to a large degree, by your genetics. As a general rule of thumb, however, I would say you have no need of going above 11 or 12%, but you can't really make any good gains below 7 or 8%. Any time your bf is much lower than that, your hormal levels will constantly be in fluctuation between an anabolic and catabolic state...your body won't know how you want it to respond. |
