Some people say it's as good or better than free weights. What are they basing this on? It's a smooth motion but it's still amachine.

Good? Maybe. Better than free weights? A resounding "no."

Nothing beats free weights. I would assume, however, that Hammer Strength machines are better than the pulley system machines. Don't quote me on that one, though, but feel free to quote me on "nothing beats free weights." =)

IMO free weights are best.....but, the Hammer Strength machines seem to work me better then any other brand machine.....but, that's only my opinion......I doubt there is any scientific proof to prove that though, only opinions...so, let's hear some more opinions

I like Hammer Strength equipment. I feel they are the best "machines" out there. I use it now and again to change up my workouts, but I still prefer free weights of course.

Hammer is a very good machine, I like their chest press because it eliminates sticking points. I definately advocate free weights but a good machine is nice to change up now and then.
You have to mix things up if you want to keep growing.

Hammer Strength Machines were created by Arthur Jones' son. Arthur Jones was the man who created the very first Nautilus equipment. I believe that Hammer Strength are the best machines out.

Hammer Strength vs. Free Weights?

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. You will have a lower chance of getting injured when using Hammer Strength equipment. Free weights are great, I would choose free weights over any type of equipment. You can indeed build good amounts of muscle when you use Hammer Strength machines, but you can build more muscle using free weights (depending on which exercises you choose to use). Hammer Strength equipment is great HIT trainees who don't have a spotter and need to train to failure. I always need a spotter when I train and sometimes no one is available in my gym, because I workout early in the morning 6 am. So I use a Hammer Strength machine in the place of my regular lift.

After doing my core exercises of heavy free weights I usually finish off a muscle doing 3 sets of some type of hammer strength machine. My stabilizers are usually pretty shot from doing the heavy basics and I'm able to really focus intensely on the muscle being trained while still going heavy by using the hammer equipment. I think it's great as a final exercise to finish blasting a muscle group. Once I hit failure I go into partial 1/2 reps then quarter reps to really burn the shit out of the muscle. It helps create a whole new growth stimulus.

Hammer strength machines are very well designed "machines." Are they better than free weights? Depends on what your training goals are. If you are out to build gut wrenching mass, then no in my opinion they are not better than free weights. However, if your goals are simply to tone or general health, then they are good substitutes for free weights. Just depends what you want to get out of your time in the gym.
