It seems that aerobics ranks up there with carbs when it comes to the negative opinions of some of the people on this board . But in truth, how much aerobics is too much? My job requires me to be aerobically fit, but I would like to gain some muscle mass (about 10-15 pounds). I currently run 3-4 miles a day, 3-4 days a week. Is this too much, will this negatively affect my muscle gains? Thanks for the feedback. ------------------

I would do cardio only 2 days a week, to gain mass. btw: I love carbs! ok ok back to the point. too much cardio definetly can affect muscle growth negatively BUT! it is important for health. I have gained about 35lbs since I began working out a little over a year ago, and I find that cardio is a little harder. but I am getting more accustomed to it.

35 lbs? How much of that was muscle and how much of that was fat? In other words, can I gain 15 lbs of muscle without a noticeable increase in bodyfat? Also, could I continue running 3 days a week, consume enough calories to compensate for the caloric expenditure from running plus additional calories for weight gain in order to put on muscle mass or is the negative affects of aerobics on muscle more than just caloric expenditure? ------------------

I do think that Cardio will hinder your gains once you reach a point. If you are going to do cardio, eat before and immediately afterwards. You should be doing cardio for your heart, not to burn calories. B True

I was a gymnast. I weighed 150 @ 5'7" I was ripped as hell, prob 5-6% BF. I now weigh 185-188 and my BF is about 9-10% I still have a good six pack, when I flex my abs you can see intercoastal muscles too. I would only run 2 days a week. eating more calories will give you a surplus in energy available to the body. but the body can only do so much no matter how much food you give it. ie: you might just get fat. I'm sure that you could gain 15lbs but you will def. gain some fat too. it's not a big deal, just lose the fat later.

I weighed 152 at the beginning of my weight training at 6'2". One of the things that has helped me was cutting back on my heavy martial arts training. If I was not able to do this because of a tournament, then I ate all that I could. I now weigh 290. Almost impossible to do both. B True

Am I correct in the belief that in order to grow one must consume calories over maintenance level? By doing aerobics and compensating for those calories burned, couldn't you still gain muscle if you are eating over maintenance level? Or does aerobics cause a hormonal response that is negative for muscle growth? ------------------

I think that I have reached the point to where I have to be careful on the amount or if I do cardio. In order for me to grow...I feel better muscular wise if I do not do cardio. I feel stronger and stronger that way. To feel better cardio and body composition wise I would do cardio. Like I said, this is just me and remember that it is going to take a lot for myself to grow a lot more. I am not a beginner. B True

even if you consume more calories than you burn. The body can only do so much itself. cut back the cardio. |
