I have heard of these before but what actually do they do. Should I be training one over the other. How will this affect my workout? Thanks | ||

Skeletal muscle is often divided into "red" and "white" types. White muscle has a greater proportion of "fast twitch fibers" while red has a greater proportion of "slow twitch fibers". Fast twitch fibers produce a rapid, forceful contraction, but fatigue rapidly. They are important for short bursts of high intensity activity such as lifting weights and sprinting. Slow twitch fibers have a higher aerobic capacity and yield less forceful contractions, but are slower to fatigue so are ideal for prolonged exercise. The proportion of fast and slow twitch fibers in different muscles varies among people and is largely genetically determined. Some research has suggested that prolonged extended exercises that are best suited for slow twitch fibers (jogging, low weights/very high reps, etc)may have a determental effect on fast twitch fibers by causing them to act like slow twitch fibers. Just my 2 cents but I think the use of low weights and high reps could be useful in muscle development, since muscles are composed of both types of fibers, as long as it is not the cornerstone of your weightlifting program. ------------------
