Wouldn't using a barbell continue to add to the strength imbalance since his right arm could cheat? Wouldn't it make better sense to continue with dumbbells but use a heavier load/fewer rep program for the right arm while continuing with his current program for the left until the imbalance is corrected? Or perhaps just add an additional heavy load set for the right arm? ------------------

I think that I had this problem when I would younger in my training days. Give us your stats...like age, weight, strength, time lifting etc... B True

NO. using a barbell is the best thing possible for creating an equilibrium in strength. the barbell won't cheat. only he can "cheat." I had a similar prob with my chest, specifically on bench press. The problem corrected itself after a couple months of patient lifting with the correct form/technique. Use a barbell for your first exercise. the biggest reason I suggest this is EXACTLY AS YOU SAID "THEKING" cheating: with dumbells if you go to heavy and cheat a little you can bend your torso in the direction of the lift and use your back to help the weight up. (you all should know what I'm talking about.) he said he was doing 3 reps with his right arm. 3reps suggests to me that he is going pretty heavy, prob. swinging the weight about 1/4 the way up then contorting his back to the side to aid in forcing it the final 3/4 the way up. this is a simple problem with a SIMPLE SOLUTION.

Thanks for the feedback. I stand corrected. Proper form with a barbell makes perfect sense. I suffer a similar imbalance with right versus left arm size and I've been adding extra weight or reps to the smaller arm by using dumbbells. Thanks alot, now I have to go and change my whole routine. LOL ------------------
