From a calorie standpoint cardio seems very inefficient. Your opinion is appeciated.

The only running I've done in my entire life was the time I was about 10 or 11 years old and I was running away from an angry German Shepphard (sp?), and my bodyfat percentage has never been higher than 12%. I can drop to 6-8% easily by just limiting my sugar/fat intake and making "pumper" exercises like dumbbell curls and dumbbell presses and dumbbell everything-else the cornerstone of my training instead of the big power movements. Genetics? Possibly. But do the math. You'll easily see that a workout with weights requires much more energy than running around for a few minutes. Oh yea... the dog got me. =( -Warik

Take a look at www.charlespoliquin.net and look up "the manly workout." Some interesting reading on weightlifting for fat loss.

Isn't it dependent on your goals? Calorie restriction does not provide the cardiovascular benefits that aerobics can. ------------------

IMHO cardio is a waste unless you are a fat slob or you have reached your size goals and are getting trying to cut. I get plenty of cardio doing 20 rep squats. ------------------

Cardio is definately not a waste. I mean, look at the name, "cardio." Good heart = good health, but in terms of fat burning, from what I've heard and observed, I don't find it to be of significant help to warrant 10000 minutes of cardio daily. I could be wrong, though, since I don't do cardio. I'll post a full report in about 3 months when I start my first cardio routine. =) -Warik

So someone who lifts 3 times a week and wants to get rid of some fat(im 18%now) what would be the best way to do this?

30 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and lift weights 3-5 times a week. ------------------

OK, its not a waste, I just think it's funny to see someone who weighs 150# or so running on a threadmill when in my opinion they should be doing squats. Who cares if your ripped if you have the body of a 12 year old girl? My point was really, wait until you are happy with your size before you waste your time on cardio.

Me, personally, I agree with LL........although I do do the odd 5min warm-up on a stairmaster.....but, rarely.....I like doing 20rep warm-up sets on whatever bodypart I'm gonna do......sure I've got fat I could stand to lose (%20BF), but, it will come off with my diet and weights...... so, it depends on what your goals are and such on wheither or not you should do cardio...and even then, it's up to you

Instead of trying 30-40 minutes of aerobics try intervals like sprinting. You get CV benefits and increased fat burning without muscle loss that large amounts of cardio can do. Look at the bodies of sprinters like Michael Johnson or Maurice Green to see what weightlifting and sprinting can do for you. ------------------

My guess is that maurice green takes a lot more than protein powder. I dont do any cardio and can manage my fat reserves, through my diet, I wish I could do it but to I dont have that amount of energy spare to burn doing unneccasery stuff like that. ------------------ |
