In regards to dumbell shoulder presses do any of you think that a slite angle on the bench is better than a 90 degree angle.

I think a slight angle is better than 90 degrees if the bench has a high back that goes all the way up to your head. I don't know about everyone else, but the taller benches, if they're 90 degrees make it feel like I'm sitting too far forward b/c it makes your upper body lean more than 90 degrees. Does that make sense? If the bench is at a 90 degree angle and you sit in it you may lessen the angle b/c your upper body will be ahead of your hips sitting on the bench. If the bench is one that just supports your back and allows you to lean back slightly with your shoulders I think it's fine.

Do what feels best in remembering that the more angle you put on it, the less stress on your shoulders. That stress becomes a stresser for the chest.

In response to your question, Yes.
MrMuscle has it correct. I dont think lowering the bench 1 notch is going to cause your pecs to do the work. And it might just save your back.

I also go one notch below 90 degrees. I find that it's less stressful on my lower back and more comfortable. Try both positions and see how your lower back feels.

If you lower the bench too much, yes you will take tension off the shoulders and place more tension on the upper pecs. However, one notch lower than 90 degrees won't take too much tension off your shoulders but it will relieve some lower back discomfort. As a result of this, you will get a much better shoulder workout.

I am more or less the same as the others on this one. I have the bench just down from 90 deg. when i do seated militarys. However, I would like to point out that when i have the bench fully upright, most of my strength dissappears. There are two possible reasons for this. 1/. Most of my strength is in my front delts and having the bench all the way up put stress on my weaker medials delts.
2/. The bench just below 90 deg. allows me to use all of my shoulder complex to press the weight and hence i lift more.
Its one or the other. I think it is best to do an exercise in the position thatyou have the best "groove". I know that is terribly subjective, but so much of training "science2 is. Cheers guys, G.
