What's up? I just changed my cardio routine from the ski machine and treadmill after I lift to hitting the heavy bag. I run at least three times a week in the morning (I'm in the military). For those of you who haven't tried it, its an awesome workout. It doesn't matter how in shape you are, 1 straight minute of hitting the bag will kick your ass. I try to hit it for at least 10, and work up. I was hoping some of you boxers could give me some advicce on some of the things I should do. What type of drills etc. Sorry this question is sort of vague but I don't know alot about boxing. So if you can post some drills I could do to improve my strength, speed, and agility (for boxing) I would apreciate it. I do not have access to a trainer right now Thanx. Sorry for the long post!!! ------------------ [This message has been edited by mrflaco (edited November 16, 2000).]

I'm not a boxer but what I do is just throw all the useful punches I might throw in a real fight. Crosses, Jabs, Hooks, Uppercuts. Just get your shoulder's nice and loose and go to work. Concentrate on form and power.

Try jumping rope - good aerobics and endurance workout and helps with the foot work (start off with intervals of 3 minutes of jumping with 1 minute of resting between the intervals, and work your way up). If you hit the weight room concentrate on back, shoulders, traps, and forearms. Do mainly exercises using your own body weight (pull ups, push ups, dips, sissy squats, etc). To help with power, work the midsection (weighted situps, good mornings, twists and obliques). And stretch, keep the muscles limber. ------------------

Hi mrflaco. What you also should be doing is practicing your technique in front of a big mirror, where you can see yourself completely. Practice series. If you don't know how: do a couple of different punches one after the other, and practice them. For example: left - straight hit, right uppercout, left - hook, right - hook. You know what I mean? Compose a couple of series that you like, and practice them in front of a mirror and on the punching bag until you learn to do it. Good luck my friend. ------------------

Have you tried that Billy Blanks shit? Seriously though, if you're hitting the bag, make sure you use a good wrist wrap and gloves. Having boxed as an amateur, it's important to realize that you can fuck yourself up if you don't know what you're doing. Broken wrists, bad technique, and the list goes on. Try to find a boxing club in your area. Good luck and keep your hands up!

I was at a party several months ago when i tried boxing for the first time, and i was hooked. I'm in fair cardio condition but boxing deffinately is a high intensity sport. specially since the only way it's fun is if your doing pretty good or at least throwin a lot of bombs.

Just be sure to watch out for any signs of elbow pain. I love training on the bag, but had to stop because it was becoming very hard to train tris without pain. Also make sure to move around. Don't just stand in front of the thing, try to bob and weave, move in and out, etc. The bags that swing alot are great for working on your footwork.

My cousin is a trainer at his college in Pittsburgh. He doesn't train people in the weight training aspect of it, just in his spare time shows people technique, footing, etc. ------------------

Don't listen to that Powerhouse21 guy. He's full of hot air...likes to hear himself talk (or write). J/K Listen to the man, I've seen him fight. He really knows his shit.

another peice of advice is even though you need strong shoulders for you re punches, youre real power comes from youre hips (like swinging a base ball bat ) if you get youre weight into youre punches ther alot faster ,stiffer, and harder ph21 if you have any specific questions email me

Listen to powerhouse. But, if you want to add even more pain for yourself have someone teach you how to kick. Then incorporate kicks into your training on the heavy bag. ------------------

if youre planning on kicking then youre not planning on comp.(boxing) then learn how to knee and elbow they open you up quicker than a hook will ph21 |
