no they are not. do both, say 2 sets chinups to failure and finish with 2-3 sets of pulldowns. has worked very well for me.

As I try to do chins with my bodyweight, mid 280's, it gets harder and harder. Do all you can, then superset with pulldowns. Works well for me.

The effectiveness of pulldowns is not even REMOTELY close to that of chinups.

So you say you find chins difficult? Then work on them. If your gym has one of those machines that allow you to do chins with your knees on a moving platform with counterweight on the otherside to "help" you do chins (sorry for the vague description, I don't know the exact name), then use it!

Try to do 2-3 sets of 8 reps using whatever counterweight is necessary for you to complete all of the repetitions. Focus heavily on form. Pull with your BACK, NOT your arms! The feeling in your biceps after a good set of chins should not be comparable to the feeling in your biceps after a good set of curls.

Once you see that you can complete all of your repetitions with a certain counterweight on the end, then it's time to lower the counterweight (and thus making the chins harder to do). Keep using a particular weight until you can do all of the reps, then drop it.

By the time you don't need any counterweight to help you do 3 full sets of chins, your wing span will put a dragon to shame. Try getting that much effectiveness with pulldowns! =)

do as many normal chins that you can do and than do as many 10second negative only chins as you can do this will help your overload so you can keep adding reps than go do lat pulldowns for 1drop set
example;chins bwt x 5reps + 2reps n/o chins
pulldowns 150x6,130x6,110x6 drop set all sets taken to failure
this should hammer your lats
hope this helps
