Which is better a machine or free weights or combo. I'd like to have a home gym even though I get to go to the gym for free. Ok. It's a wife thing. She said I spend more time there than at home.

What about BowFlex or a Free weight / machine? What do you use??

Get yourself a good sturdy bench, a bar, 2 dumbell bars, and some plates. You should know that you can do a heck of a lot with that. Who knows, maybe your wife will decide to join you and then suggest more equipment! Cool.
Personally, I have a power rack w/bench, an old DP multi-gym, a vertical leg press, lat pulldown machine, various bars and handles, and a few hundred pounds of plates. Of course I didn't buy it all at once, but it sure is working out nicely! (My husband bought the leg press for me. What a guy!!)

It depends on a number of factors, how much experience you have, how much space you have, how much can you afford, and what are your goals.

Personally I like free weights myself. I've bought most of my equipment from Fitness Factory Outlet, www.fitnessfactory.com
I have a bench that has 15 positions that goes from decline to a full 90 degrees, an attatchable leg extension/leg curl station, an attatchable lat pull down/ seated row station, a few bars that include one that revolves, dumbbell handles that go from 2 1/2 to 85bbs., a weight tree, and a few hundred pounds of free weights. I also didn't buy all of this overnight but it has been the best investment I've ever made.

I've never tried BowFlex but I've heard that they don't work too good. Whatever you buy, don't go too cheap because you get what you pay for

I have about 5 years experience. I plan on setting it up in the garage. It will have to take the room of one car. I was thinking of one of those multiple free weight stations that also has a smith.

I have hear the same about the BowFlex but just wondered.

The wife plans on using some of the space for a treadmill and stationary bike. Thx for the input!
