My gym has a Hammer Strength leg press machine. When using it, I noticed pain in my lower back. I'm thinking it's due to improper form. My butt is coming up off the board. Should I place my feet higher? How far down should I let me knees drop? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Your legs should come down as far as they will go without lifting your butt of the board. That will cause the back pain.

You can also try lowering the incline on the back rest so your legs will come down farther without your butt coming off the board.

If you put your feet high you work your hamstrings more than the quads if you place them low you concentrate on the quads. So your foot placement should depend on which muscle you want to concentrate on.

When you do leg presses, make sure your back is flat against the pad and your butt is on the seat. When you're performing the exercise, your back and your butt should not be moving. Also, if do as I say and your back still hurts, go see a chiropractor. It is possible that you may have thrown your back out. When I was working at Albertsons, during high school, I through my back out from pushing carts and lifting kegs. I couldn't do any squats or leg presses. It would actually be a good idea to see a chiropractor once a month. You'll feel a lot better and if you have extra money, hire a masseuse to work on your body maybe once or twice a week. I know the owner of my gym, so I get discounts (haha). Take care of yourself.

Listen to these guys. I have had a similar problem in the past on a 45 degree sled type machine. To get past it, I focused on one thing other than my legs. My tailbone must stay in firm contact with the seat/pad. The minute it feels like it's pressure against the pad is diminishing, I know that's as far as I can go (and I prefer to keep it solidly against the seat/pad).

Hey guys, lower back pain???? Drop the frickin belt. I mean get rid of the belt for everything including squats and shrugs as well. It may sound strange but i did it a month ago and i am rockin with no more lower back pain. Even with stiff legged deadlifts I AM NOW BELTLESS.

Thannks for all the input. I did some reading this weekend on proper form on the leg press. I'll concentrate on keeping my butt flat throughout the exercise. Tomorrow I train legs. I'm looking forward to it!!

I still wear a belt when I do legs. I f*ck up my back 3 years ago. But the other guys are right about keeping you butt from moving. Or as I like to put it "keep your butt in the crack". Lower the back part of the press. I use the belt as added support. Besides, it hurt when I pressed without the belt. And as far as going belt-less.... do what feels right. But most of all let your back heal first! Then try dropping the belt.

1 leg at a time will force you to keep the tailbone down. The hammer machine with independent platforms for each foot is the best for this.
