I'm looking for information about strength levels in relation to one's body weight. I am 5'7", 158lbs, and bench 235. However, I don't know if this is decent or what. People talk about their performance on certain lifts in relation to their body weight but how do you know what is good and what isn't? This would really help me gage my performance and potential. Thanks in advance for any advice.

There are so many variables, it wouldn't be very accurate to judge your strength directly from your bw.

much agreed with blacktop.

example, my max bench is 275lb my friends is 285lb and HE WEIGHS 160 and I weight 180 hmmmmm,

we'll he squats 275 max and I squat 425 max?
must be my legs right? nope I can shoulder press 15 more pounds than him for six reps?

Strength is very, very difficult to guage via BW.

I hear that. I'm 230 but because I'm so tall I can maybe bench 240 or so right now.

Yeah I agree, I weigh 170 and i'm about 6 foot. I don't know what I max on bench, I use 45 lb dumbells for 2 sets of 8 dumbell chest press. I squat 185 for sets of 6. I know a hs wrestler who is a lot stronger and bigger than I am yet he only weighs 155. I have no idea how thats possible. Its hard to believe I weigh 170, I'm strong I suppose but not for my bw, I'm not fat so I have no idea why I weigh so much.

It's my opinion that everyone has one bodypart stronger than others. It's not so much that they have more muscle in that area but they have mastered the muscle group psycologically. Some people simply have amazing brute strength in all fields, but if you put yourself in the right state of mind, you can do some great things.

1.5 your bodyweight on the bench is a good goal . 2.5times your bodyweight on deadlift and squat another good goal.this will set you apart from the crowd.but remember each goal is reached at one step at a time and a lot of hardwork.
good luck
