I've been lifting weights for about 2-3 months now (but only seiously for about 2). I did experience some fairly rapid initial gain in muscle mass, but now find that the muscles aren't growing as fast as they were. In terms of dietary intake of protein, for relegious reasons i can't eat meat mondays and thursdays, and while i try to get loads of protein down my neck, don't feel i'm getting enough.

Is it safe then to try one of these protein supplememnts? Many advertise free-from amino acids--> does this mean i'm still training 'au natural', or are there any health risks with these? are they derived from beef (i can't eat that)? and is creatinine safe because a lot of the supplements have that in them as well? Would a standard whey protein drink do what i need?

Also in terms of the excercise routine you guys use, how many sets do you do per body part, and what sort of time gap do you leave between sets. I find myself doing barbell curls for 4 sets, tiring out, waiting a while (say 1/2 hour) then doing another few. Sorry to ask so many questions but it will answer a hell of a lot of questions of mine.

The only way to stay natural is never using steroids. There is nothing wrong using supplements. Amino acid supplements would be safe to use, just be sure to follow the instructions on how to take them. Instead of spending your money on aminos, spend it on a good quality protein powder or meal replacement. I recommend trying Muscle Link supplements. They have a good meal replacement (Muscle Meals) and a good protein powder (Pro Fusion). They both have a good protein blend (Micellar Casein, Whey Concentrate and Egg). Creatine may help you, but it is not needed. Glutamine would be a good supplement to buy. If you use Muscle Meals or Pro Fusion, you don't need to buy glutamine. Each serving has 10 grams of glutamine peptide which is enough. As for training, email me for a good routine. I would be more than happy to help you. Good luck.

is it possible just to get a powder with just protein in it? I'm not 100% sure about this, but there was some kind of a warning about glutamine, saying if you took it on an empty stomach you 'may' get nerve damage etc. I don't even know if the guy who said this is medically qualified (though if yuou take a herb called ginko bilbao it apparently reduces the risks). is it safe, because they stick glutamine in a hell of a lot of stuff, or is this just a media scare?

this a link to the web site saying the bad stuff about glutamine supplements http://home.earthlink.net/~swibber/glutaminerisks.htm

Dude, don't get sucked into believing everything you hear. Glutamine causes nerve damage?? And Ginko will help avoid it??? Yeesh! 2-3 tsp (10-15gm) of glutamine at 1 tsp at a time per day is a great thing. Nytro Whey from ProSource is a good all whey product, Designer is good, I'm sure many will tell you the proteins at www.proteinfactory.com are good, and ProBlend 55 is a good mix of proteins. I also like Muscle Meals for a post workout shake, but you will need more glutamine throughout the day than the 10 gm in that product. Keep reading at this place, lots of good info. And make sure to eat whole food!
