A superset is when you do 2 exercises for different body parts(chest/back or bi/tri), and you perform one right after the other with no rest.

Example- You do a set of close grip bench presses(tricep), get up and grab a straight or curling bar and do barbell curls(bicep) with no rest. You get what I'm sayin?

It's just for variety....something to add to shock the muscles.

supersets can be for opposing bodyparts or the same bodyparts example;benchpress-chins or benchpress-flys these are used for variety or to shock the muscle:jumpsets are another form of supersets example benchpress/chins you do these alternating the excercises but you take a minute rest inbetween the excercises now what are trisets+giant sets???

BigBear- the reason I said they were for different bodyparts is because 2 straight exercises for the same bodypart is a compound set. Isn't it?

Compound exercises are ones that hit more than one muscle at once - Best by ALL opinions - Bench Press, Squat, DeadLifts.

Isolation exercises only work one specific muscle. Think, concentrated Curls, calf raises.

Supersets are also good if you are pressed for time some day.

Big Bear

I'm glad you brought that up because a traditional superset involves only opposite muscle groups. But a superset is basically 2 exercises back to back. It doesn't matter if they're opposite muscles or the same muscles.

A tri-set or a giant set, (they're both the same thring) is a superset and more! Instead of doing 2 exercises back to back, a gaint set involves 3 exercises back to back to back. You think supersets are intense, you just do a few giant sets and your muscles will be screaming!

Train......................(H)ard
Train with................(I)ntensity
Train with................(P)urpose

trisets are 3 excercises back to back
[benchpress+flys+dips]same body part
[benchpress+chins+flys] oppossing bobyparts
[benchpress+chins+db press] 3 bodyparts

giant sets are 4 or more excercises
benchpress+flys+inclines+crossovers=same bodyparts
[benchpress+chins+flys+pullovers]oppossing bodyparts

all these are used to up the intensitity of a workout you can use this when time is short or for a change of pace during your yearly cycle

what's the point of a superset or a triset??
OK, let the flames begin... really.
Lee Haney himself said that during a superset you SHOULD STILL wait 1-2 minutes before doing a set. BIG WIEGHTS BUILD BIG MUSCLES. why waste time? do a superset to me means: doing one heavy set to failure and then doing another set to failure (diff exercise). ???

Drop sets are a different story: very beneficial, so ask yourself "if you like supersets or giant sets: does "superset= drop set"

by the way, this is a very intelligent post: think about it mine gentlemen and respond with opinions!!!!!!!!!!

So...the questions is, does Superset=Drop Set. Answer, Yes/No/Maybe.
Yes, if you are hitting the same muscle from the same angle (Bench Press/Flat Dumbell Press).
Maybe, If you are hitting the same muscle from a different angle (Bench Press/Dips).
No, If you are supersetting different muscles (Bench Press/Calf Raises).
As there are different varieties of supersets you cannot give a denfinite answer.

valdez-all these type of training is for upping the intensitity of your workout and for variety-drop sets are not a superset you basically extending your original set by reducing your weight.drop sets are my favorite excercise tech. but try this
bench press [drop set]5reps
pec dec 8-12reps
dips max reps
------------------
all done in triset fashion all done to failure 4second negative/2second positive
muscle under tension for 222seconds vs.90seconds just doing dropsets your body can handle this type of training in small doses 1or 2 trisets once a week.the good thing about this type of training is your done when every body else is just starting
good lifting

Interesting thread. Yesterday I've experimented with supersetting triceps/biceps exercises and what an amazing pump! For example...1 set close grip benches..immediately followed by standing curls. I must say, with this technique my whole arm just blows up! Not to mention the amount of time I'm saving. I'm going to incorporate this supersetting into my other training days (doing for example supersets quads/hams), just to find out how it feels and also to see how quickly this will lead to stagnation and overtraining (which is, IMO a definition that is used way 2 much, underEATING and underRESTING is really the problem nowadays!)
However, I still put the big 3 in the core of my routine and will only superset exercises other than these big 3 (deads, squats, bench).
