These days when I squat or do deads I get a terrific pain in my lower back. It is the spinal erectors and they are spazzing out on me. This pain is really hurting my progress because I can't go heavy anymore. If I use a really tight belt it helps a little bit. Sometimes the pain is so bad I can't stand up and it really sucks because its not my quads that are hurting. Any ideas about how I might fix this problem?

Yes Bro, I know exactly what you are going through. Here is my deal. See if it might apply to you. My calves and hamstrings get tight and pull on the erectors, through the glutes. Solution? Stretch the hamstrings. Good LONG stretches, maybe a minute and a half or more. I do three or four sets. I have been stretching mine every other night for a few weeks now, and the pain is all but gone.

Miles, I have the same problem. I went and saw a sports doctor, and he told me that my spine is digging into itself. The problem is in the first lumbar area of my back (mid - lower back). You should go and see a doctor too. They will take some X-rays, and give you some stretches to do. The stretch that helps me the most is crunches. Do slow controlled crunches. This will help pull the spine apart. I had two Doctors tell me not to squat or deadlift anymore. I'm sure your problem isn't as severe as mine. My problem is actually from a life time of volleyball. Hope this helps ------------------ Scott

I forgot to mention that I have been doing some serious yoga for the last six months. Yes, my hamstrings and calfs were very tight in the beginning, but they are MUCH better now. Maybe I should stretch the hams really well just before I try squatting and see if it is any better. I hate doctors.

Stretch a lot. Like trying to do the splits from all directions. Stretch your hams a lot. Do a set or two of light abs before you train back. Do a set or two of light light leg curls before squats. Lose the belt. B True |
