A friend wants me to email how to properly do dead lifts... hmmm.. so easy to show, but proper form is essential for this exercise.

This is what I'm planning to send to him... did I miss anything crucial???

Stand with a narrow stance, legs and upper body straight.

Slowly bend over until your back is parallel to the floor.

Grip a barbell on the floor. Your hands should be slightly wider than your shoulders and your grip can either be overhand or mixed if you have a heavy weight.

Inhale and hold your breath as you raise your body.

When you reach an upright position, exhale and lower the weight.

Here is an excellent description of how to perform the deadlift. You might want to send this to your friend in addition to your description.

Although, I never deadlift with my back parallel to the floor. That sounds as if it would put wayyyyy too much pressure on the lower back for a deadlift. For a STIFF-legged deadlift that's a different story, but I would never try to pick such a heavy weight off the floor bent over 90 degrees. My back is positioned and moves roughly the same as it would during a squat.

Thanks.. it's so easy to show someone, but trying to put it in words is something else for me.

I would just die if he called me up saying he hurt his back after following the instructions.

I found an old web site with pictures, and a description of the stiff legged variety.
