Ok, so I've got this friend who has made a few gains relatively easily since he hasn't lifted in forever. He is now convinced that he is a weightlifting guru. It has now been deemed "useless" to eat 6 meals a day. "2-3 meals are fine man." That's not the problem... I've already proved him wrong about that... the problem is his training "philosophy."

He believes that a) isolation exercises are "better for getting huge" than those "gay" compound exercises (aka leg extensions make squats look like pussy exercises) and b) machines and free weights are the "same shit" and sometimes machines are "better" because they "isolate" the muscle. You guys know he's wrong. I know he's wrong... but he doesn't know he's wrong. I've tried explaining it over and over, but any more explanations and I'll need a new set of vocal cords.

Does anyone know of a few good resources online where this "philosophy" of his can be proven wrong? I don't want him to stop growing one day and then wonder why his stupid forearm dumbbell curls or whatever the hell he's doing isn't doing crap for him.

Thanks,
-Warik

You knew I'd answer this, didn't you?....
OK...resources...hmmm. www.drsquat.com www.deepsquatter.com ...(westside's site) www.hardgainer.com ...(Stuart McRobert's site)

They should provide him with enough real world stuff to convince him. Otherwise hunt down any physiology journal online and look for things on muscle growth in response to exercise trauma...might take a while but good objective scientific proof is out there to be found.
Last, tell him to save his money for a trip to Scotland to see 290lbs of G that has never sat in a machine, done a leg extension or side lateral and would quite happily show him the difference between a "real" exercise and a "pussy" exercise.
BTW..if you need proof in a hurry, get him to do ten sets of squats to failure with 220 lbs, 90 secs rest between sets, then talk to him the next day. Whether he gets 30 reps in a set or 5 wont matter, he will be crushed.
Ask him if leg extensions are this hard.....cheers, G.

Why do you care so much about what he know or thinks? If you don't agree with him, fine. It'll come back and bite him in his ass sooner or later. He'll start looking for different approaches to training after his gains cease. And when he starts talking about his training philosophy, he'll look like a real idiot to people that know how to train. If I were you I'd just sit back and watch. I laugh at people like him. In probably 6 months, he'll start doubting himself and he will resort to another training strategy.

LOL G... if I knew that you posted here, then your reply would not have come as such a surprise. (hey, cool.. at the time of my reading of this message, you and I have the exact same number of posts).

I'd tell him to do 1 set of squat with 220lbs, but he doesn't squat. Squats are "gay" remember? I managed to get him to agree to do legs with me one day. I can imagine the look on his face after I change the bar position after squats for stiff-legged deadlifts: "What??? More? Shit! I thought that was it!"

And HIT, the reason I care is cause he's a long-time friend and I don't want to see him waste his time. If the day I turned 17, the "me" of the future came to me and said: "Here you go man... this is how to train," then I would weigh at least 185lbs by now as opposed to my present weight of 170lbs. Don't worry... I do sit back and laugh at people like him. =)

Best to learn when you're young. Thats the main reason I'm here. Everything else makes it that much better. I know what ya mean, I got a friend who believes training legs are not important. He thinks training arms everyday will get them huge. Slowly but surely I'm getting him to change his way of thinking. Can't stand to see him waste his time and natural hormones training upper only.

Tell your friend to check out this site! http://home.hia.no/~stephens/exphys.htm It's a great referrence guide, especially for somebody who is just starting out.

You can also try to convince him to become a member here and maybe we all can get him on the right track! But either way, he's got to want to change his way of thinking. If he doesn't want to, your just beating your head against the wall.

Tell your friend he is a fucking idiot...and have him tell a world class powerlifter to their face that the squatting they do is "gay".
