I have heard differing opinions. it makes sense to me that it would be ok cause after lifting your glycogen stores are depleted and you'll burn fat the second you step on a treadmill. a dude on this site said 8 hours apart. I assume that is so the muscles can assimilate carbs into glycogen within the muscle, then comes cardio which will suck the glycogen right out again? HELP!

yeah, i was the one who said that, i read that when you do cardio right after heavy weights, your muscle become engorged with lactic acid, which slows don the recovery process. this is something i read and what i go by, i dont know how valid it is, but ive always been training for mass so i never really did too much cardio maybe others will give you better info

I think too much thought goes into this issue. I would recommend cardio after lifting simply because your energy stores are higher before strength training. If you did cardio first, it would be hard to have enough energy for a good workout. I think the whole glycogen depletion and the lactic acid buildup are not important. The eight hours apart issue is pretty much unfounded unless someone magically pulls a study out saying that cardio 8 hours after strength training burns much more fat. You should have little problem doing cardio after a workout. Afterall, thats when most people do it anyway.

Definitely do cardio after you lift! And if your cardio is not too intense, then you shouldn't experience any lactic acid buildup. The lactic acid buildup is caused from a lack of oxygen going to the working muscle(s). Durration is far more important than intensity when it comes to any kind of cardio and burning fat. -------------------------------------- Train.........................(S)mart

If I do cardio I would do a light session after lifting for no more than 20 minutes. If I want to get a good cardio workout I would do it on non lifting day. And the lactic acid build up is a big deal. Too much lactic acid will slow down your ability to recover from workouts. This is one of the reasons why I do HIT style workouts. I don't do enough sets to get high amounts of lactic acid in my system. I do less, but more efficient sets. I don't do cardio because my body is constantly burning calories while I'm recovering. As long as I diet and workout intensely, I will get leaner without doing a single session of cardio. And I will not lose any muscle. People always complain and say, "Yeah, I tried HIT. HIT made me real fat." NO! HIT did not make you fat, you did. You have very poor dieting skills. Of course you're going to get fat if you eat like a high endurance athlete. I know a guy who gained 20 pounds of fat and blamed it on HIT. I asked him how many calories he was taking in each day. He started out weighing 180 pounds and was eating like Dorian Yates. He was taking in around 5,000 calories a day. Not smart. Well, sorry for getting off track. Good luck Valdez. ------------------ |
