I just installed a homemade chin bar in my basement....it's about 3 feet long. What I what to know is what is the proper technique to do a chin? Also what type of chin should I do to put more stress on the lats? And is there any other thing I should know about them that would prevent me from getting an injury?

as with all excercises dont forget to stretch. wide grip works lats more then close grip; close grip is weell assisted by you biceps. in my opinion wide is much better

Don't use a wide grip as this reduces your range of movement.A "wide grip" should be shoulder width, also keep tension on the muscle when your in the full stretch position, as it can damage the shoulders if you relax and let the shoulders rotate.I also find that a pronated grip with tumbs over the bar helps focus tension on the lats.A suppinated grip works the biceps more.
Stretch in between sets, and supersetting with pullovers are also good.

I think variation in width of grip and in hand position (palms facing, palms away) is important for overall development. For more lat work, a wide grip should be used, but like BigGerry said wide grip should be about shoulder width.

Just thought of another question: When I pull myself should a bring the bar behind my head or to my chest....or both?

like pontiac says - wider is better IMHO. I hate these suckers but I always get sore and the lats seem to like it. I try to envision a nice arched out back-double biceps. Pull that bar right to your clavicles (the goal anyways) and hold the flex for a sec.

my $.02

Still can't forget an old video I have of Bertil Fox weighing 240 or so repping out the chins with 110 pounds strapped on...
