Please help me put together a vitamin-antioxidant & herb regimen. I read some of your posts in the search & it seems you know your stuff pretty well.Right now I take a multi when I get up & then at the next meal I take 500-1000mg of vitamin C, SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG POST I JUST WANTED TO ------------------ Bros before Hos [This message has been edited by scott825 (edited August 16, 2000).]

Thanks for the kind words. I'll try and help out if I can. I'm pretty heavy into the research on life extension as far as supplementation goes so I'll fill you in on a quick review of what I know thus far. Oh, and about the claritin, try and wean yourself off of it. It is very toxic stuff and I'm not sure of how it might affect you. Let me know if allergies are a problem for you and I'll make a recommendation specifically for that.
Resveratrol---protects against heart disease, protects against cancer. Derived from red wine (this is the chemical in red wine that allows the french to abuse their bodies just like Americans do yet have half of the number of cancer and heart attacks). Costs about 15 bucks a month. This price will go up as science and the media discover more about it. CoQ10---protects against heart disease, increases oxygenation of tissues, provides a small degree of energy, protects against cancers, potent antioxidant. Derived from beef heart. Costs about 15 bucks a month. Huperizine A---protects against many pesticides and other poisons. It is so effective for this purpose that it is now used by the military. It may prevent Alzheimer's disease, improves memory. Costs about 15 dollars a month. Like resveratrol, it soon will increase in price when it becomes more widely known. Alpha Lipoic Acid---cleans the body of toxins (used in south american countries as the only antidote for certain mushroom poisonings), purifies liver, mops up heavy metals (therefore preventing Alzheimers and other nerve degeneration conditions, improves utilization of blood glucose, used to treat adult diabetes in many countries, potent antioxidant, helps decrease bodyfat over time. There is actually some credible research showing that it may help decrease the damage caused by strokes if given within a few days of the injury. Acetyl-L-Carnitine---improves memory, concentration, hand-eye coordination, helps reduce stress, increases normal testosterone production in men, may be useful as an anti-aging compound, can help prevent age-related mental decline if used regularly during middle years, decreases bodyfat and increases lean muscle mass. Rats fed ALC with no other variable live longer than the control rats who don't get it. This is pretty cool. Costs about 25 bucks a month for a one gram a day dose. I take 2 grams a day to maintain large muscle mass. Garlic---may be one of the most effective cancer preventatives, helps repel mosquitos and other pesky insects. Costs about 5 bucks a month. It also improves the blood cholesterols, thereby hopefully preventing heart disease and stroke. MSM---helps improve joint function, may decrease tumor growths, may treat depression, detoxifies the body. Costs about 7 bucks a month.
If I had to choose the most important supplements of these, then I'd take the garlic, the CoQ10 and the huperizine...since they are the most scientifically sound. They do not interact with one another. If you are worried about that then use my approach of taking something different every other month as well as make sure to take each one at different meals or times of day. The things that I take each and every month are Acetyl L Carnitine and the Life Force Vitamins. I take them each and every month because I'm finding that in my daily journal I feel much better physically and mentally overall in the months that I do take them. If you don't want to use the Life Force brand of vitamins, then you can check out Parrillo Essential vitamins and mineral electrolyte formula. They are great quality, plus they last about 3 months for an average of about 12 bucks a month. I don't think these will interfere with your medications, but to be on the safe side you might run them by your family doctor in order that he or she will be informed. Did that cover everything? I hope it helps. Please let me know if you have any specific questions about any of this material. Take care and good health!

hey backdoc, first of all great post, lots of great information. so you think the Life Force vitamins are alot better than say Twinlab Daily 2, and other similar vitamins in cap/tab form? my other question is in regard to your cycling strategy. to me, it seems based on your "less of more" philosophy, that you would take less of all of the nutrients at once instead of taking large doses of 2-4 supps and then switching it to large doses of 2-4 different supps. another question i thought i'd throw in is what do you think about organic vs. non organic foods? lately i've been trying to get organic eggs, organic milk, fruits, etc. with all the god-knows-what they put into the animals and foods today i feel it is probably more important than most people realize.

d1734---the less is more strategy is more of a "less often" than "less amounts". However, I do drink a small bit of the liquid vitamins at several times during the day rather than all at once. By taking 2-4 supps each month, you'll notice that many of them do similar jobs. That way, I can get the similar effects without going bankrupt. As far as the organic foods, I do eat veggies that come from home-grown sources. I do not eat anything that is genetically engineered...except for the rBGh's in the meat that I eat. That's where the supps come in. Things like huperizine, ALA and MSM perform the liver detox and general toxin removal. I totally agree. There are all sorts of nasty things we are exposed to in the food, water and air we take in. Instead of going too paranoid in trying to make sure everything is toxin-free, I take detox supps like the ones mentioned above. Yes, I do screen as best I can, but you can really drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what all is in the food. As far as the Life Force vitamin supplement being better than Twinlab's I'd be guessing since I've never taken Twinlab's version. However, non-ionic vitamins go through the normal digestive processes and you wind up with a lower absorption rate than with an ionic vitamin/mineral. I don't know if that helps. Scott---the liquid vitamins contain plenty of c, e, and b vitamins...however, since I too require a lot of extra protein, I drink a protein shakes each day for the b vitamins. I also supplement with B12 on occasion (like once or twice a week). You're probably aware that ALA can do the job of vitamins C and E if you happen to be deficient, but I'd personally rather let all the ALA I take carry out detox functions rather than having it used up in picking up the slack of C and E. I eat plenty of fruits and veggies and I also use flaxseed and olive oil. That really covers my bases as far as vitamins C and E. Does that help? Take care

backdoc, if you want some good meat try Maverick Ranch brand beef. it will cost you more, but it supposed to be free from all the steroids, antibiotics, etc. it also comes in a 4% fat version with only 1g of saturated fat per serving. i love the taste personally too. right now i'm in the process of trying to find a farmer's market around here. from everything i read the fresher the better so i'm gonna try my hardest to find a good market. i'm gonna check out that Life Force vitamin next time i run out. twinlab has some very high doses though so even with lower absorbtion i'd think it is at least decent.

BacDoc i was wondering which was best for boosting immune system and which is better for allergies? I take echinacea whenever i start coming down with a cold, but was wondering what if anything out there was better... thanks

I've had good success with taking bee pollen. Also, the garlic supplement has been shown to help some people who have chronic allergies. If you are sick and need something to help you get over a cold, then here's a little recipe that might help. Chicken broth---boil real chicken, not boullion cubes. Add a couple of cloves of whole garlic and let it cool down. Drink it or eat it as a soup. Chicken stock is known to be a good source of antihistimines and the garlic will help rid your body of the toxins. Yes, the garlic will stink up the house, but at least you'll get over your cold faster. Good luck! |
