I heard the protein out of protein bars comes from horse hooves. Is that true? If it is its worthless.

That's a good question, I think either way protein bars are worthless anyway, you can't get half decent protein, and they cost an arm and a leg!!! just buy egg whites! or meat, or protein powder, you'll be better off, trust me... ------------------

The "protein bar" manufacturers are allowed to use proteins derived from gelatin sources which is a by-product of animal skins and things like hooves. (yummy!) These gelatins are in MANY of the prepared foods we eat. It seems that the real, usable protein content of many of these bars is suspect. I used to use them for snacks, but don't touch them now. Some experts are saying they're more candy than anything else. Just my .02

I'm not sure about horse hooves, but most of the protein in bars are casinate and lower grade whey. Very few use high grade Whey Isolates. The best protein sources from bars that I've seen (and I haven't seen them all) are Labrada bars, which give a variety of whey and Casinate to slow absorbtion, Biochem's Ultimate Protien Bar, and VPX's Cross Pro bar. I may have forgotten some. These bars are also reasonably low in sugar. I must agree that protien powders are better.

Horse hooves for protein? I am not sure where you come from but that is not allowed for human consumption in canada unless clearly marked contains bone meal. I have never seen one which does. You should be carefull what you believe. If it is glycerin you are talking about it is in everything. Base ingredient for jello, jelly beans, case on all non vegicap pills, etc. This does not contain any protein. It is ground up bones.

Personally, I think they're not that expensive, and can provide a nutritious, convenient meal on the go...and I think SOLID PROTEIN Nature's Best are the best tasting on the market, and VERY LOW IN SUGAR, so I've been eating those for a while, and I also like the Power Bar Protein plus, and good 'ole Balance Bars for a real lite snack...my 2 cents... ------------------

I don't use protein bars, because most of them are high in sugar. If I would ever use them, I would use them after a workout for the sugars. Sugar is a simple carb and will help you replenish your glycogen stores. But there are better alternatives for restoring glycogen. If the protein bar is low in sugar, it is often sweetened with aspartame. I don't use aspartame products. You're better off spending your money on protein powders and MRPs, instead of protein bars. ------------------
