METS do not have specific units. One MET is the equal to an individuals resting energy output. Therfore, if someone at rest is burning 2 Kcal per minute and they are sprinting and expanding 16 Kcal/minute they are exercising at 8 METS (8 times greater than resting energy expenditure). ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hey Dec, 3.2 Liters of O2 per minute per kilo!! For just 1 MET! that would be like 200 liters of O2 per minute for the average guy! Huge lungs! Our resting tidal volume (the amount we breath per breath is about .5 liters-- so if we breath 20 times per minute thats like 10 Liters per minute or so at rest. 10 Liters divided by 60minutes divided by 70 kilos (average weight) is about 3 ml per min per kg. which is the value usually used. so you probably had just changed the milliliters to liters (honest mistake, I was just razzin ya above!). This is the AVERAGE value of a MET. For anyone except an Exercise Scientist (bastards make us be precise) this average value is quite fine. Most people don't know their resting O2 consumption anyway, but just for your knowledge technically it has no precise value. good luck bambamr IP: Logged |
