Hi,
I'm an Asian dying to gain weight and bulk up. I weight train 3 times a week. I've experienced quite a few health problems since taking protein powder supplements (Pro Complex, EAS Myoplex MASS) and some weight-gain powder. I got sick more easily, more pimples and have diarrhoea. As a result, I lost weight!!! What is wrong?

I'm currently going through some colon cleansing program. I'm eating more raw vegetables and fruits and have stopped taking the supplements for a while. I'm better now but I still want to continue weight training and bulking up. How can I do so if at the same time I want to be healthy? Are there any alternative protein or mass-building supplements for bodybuilders who are vegetarians? I'm not a vegetarian now but those supplements I mentioned earlier make me feel worst.

Please advice.

Thank you.

Hi Nick. You're probably taking too much protein per serving. The human body battles to digest anything more than 40grams at a time. Some people can take more than this without a problem, while others start having gastro-intestinal upset after only 30grams, but 40grams is about average. You might also be lactose-intollerant. Try using water instead of milk (also remember:milk also contains about 4% protein). Another common cause of your problem is combining caffeine (coffee) and creatine - give yourself about 1 hour gap (before and after) between taking these 2 supplements.

Good Luck
Rohan

Thank you Rohan for your reply.

Each serving I take contains 26.5g whey protein, lactose-free ones. I understand I cannot take too much per serving. And each day I take 3-4 servings, spread out over time. Anyway I do feel these powder are not very healthy for the digestive system. I was looking for alternatives instead. Something more healthy, I do not mind those vegetable fuels but I do not know if they are just as effective.

Hey man. I know people with problems similiar to yours if not quite so dramatic. I would sudgest switching from the protien powder to eating plenty of chicken, tuna etc. and then supplimenting with some liquid amino acids like Amino Fuel or something. It has all the essencial amino acids you need to grow. Then throw in some glutamine which you would also get from a protien shake. Protien suppliments aren't a neccesity, they are just easier. Also take a look around the net for info on HMB. It sounds good. Good luck.

Instead of whey, try soy protein. It may not give you so much trouble.

Try cutting down to using a regular 300 calorie MRP twice a day (no mass or high calorie stuff) with four meals a day. Split them up and Drink as much water with your meals as you can without puking. Stay away from Creatine for many it is more bothersome then beneficial. With a lot of these it's not much different then drinking a pop and taking a bunch of vitamins. Taking multiple manufactured vitamins many times a day will upset my stomach the same way. Mix in a lot more vegtables and tuna stay away from starches..

Thank you all for replying. I'm quite amazed at the enthusiastic responses I'm getting. This is great. I think the Internet is really cool for exchanging ideas all over the world!

I do believe that lots of water, vegetable and staying away from starches and protein shakes and creatine is the answer to my woes.
Which MRPs would you guys recommend. And wat do I look for in an MRP?

Thanks.
Nick

Hey nick! your problem is not uncomon the best thing anyone can do in your situation is Ace the shakes! They are far less benificial than good old fashioned food. Try eating small high protine meals more offten thoughout the day. Lift heavy and i promis you will get better results. Try and stick with the vit if possable. As they work well with food. Good luck!

There is no compelling reason for you to stop your normal dietary intake. If your digestion is used to mainly a vegetarian diet, stick to it and simply increase the amount of meals. There is absolutely no reason for you to start supplementing anything. While your size growth may not be spectacular you will remain healthy while you train and you will experience hypertrophy even on a vegetarian diet.
