That's terrible. You should do a little more research about nutrition before you ask questions like these.

Try the plain old puffed rice and puffed wheat cereals. Much healthier and only 50 calories PER CUP. Most junk food cereals are like 110-210 PER HALF CUP!!

True, i usually eat those puffed unsweeted wheat & rice cereals, if you eat that take a multi-vitamin ( preferably one that is part of a 3 a day vitamin ) and drink some protein mix then you got a fairly decent meal. also shredded wheat isn't a bad choice as long as its not the sugar coated type.

First off, you need to determine how many calories it takes to maintain your weight. That depends on your active metabolic rate. Once you've calculated that you increase your calorie intake by 10-15%. A rule of thumb is that you need at least 1g of protein per lb of body weight. Carb intake should be 2-3g per lb of bodyweight: it depends on your metabolism, if you gain bodyfat easily, eat less carbs and if you can't gain weight easily then go for 3g. At least 30% of your calories should come from fat.

Why don't you post what you eat and when you eat: it is as important than what you eat Also, post your weight, height and age.

Actually, the original Total, All-Bran, and other high fiber cereals like that are pretty damn good. They're filling, and are pretty packed with nutrients. Generally, the other high-fiber, low sugar cereals are pretty good ways to get your carbs, but if I were you I'd have a bowl of oatmeal with a scoop of protein powder mixed in instead.

I know the cereal is good for you if you can't eat it without putting something on it like milk, yogurt or fruit. e.g. Weetbix. If you can eat it straight out of the packet it is probably too high in fat and sugars e.g. Crunchanola.

The only stupid questions are the one that don't get asked. Please don't be afraid to ask questions on this board. Others may have the same question and be afraid to ask, to avoid getting flamed.

I don't eat cereal every day, however, when I do eat it, it's shredded wheat and bran with 1% milk. Sometimes, I'll have a little yogurt too. This will give you protein, carbo's and fat, and be very high in fiber, which is very good for you, and your bowels. It will be slightly low in protein, so make sure you're getting it elsewhere throughout the day. Or, you can switch out the yogurt for cottage cheese, which will increase your protein. I wouldn't eat it more than once per day, and watch which cereals you choose. Some of them appear innocent enough, because they say whole grains, etc. on the front of the box, but they may be very high in sugar. Look for high fructose corn syrup, that's sugar. Just check the labels under the ingredients. Look for high fiber, low sugar, some protein.

It depends what kind of cereal your eating. I would say something like Special K is ok. Just make sure your not having one of the "sugary" cereals. I'll have a bowl of Special K every so often. Instead of adding just milk, I mix a serving of vanilla flavored protein in the milk for extra protein. I would suggest something like oatmeal or oat bran instead of regular cereal. I also like Belial's suggestion of Total. That would be a good choice also!

Aside from being loaded with sugar -- which others have already pointed out -- most, if not all cereals are LOADED with iron. In males, this is not only unneccesary, but detrimental to your cardiovascular system. Don't believe me? Look it up. And if you consider all of the iron in MRP's, you're really overloading your body with iron. Trust me, that's a no-no.

This is true, but there's an interesting twist on that I learned back in high school. Take cup of iron fortified cereal. Throw it in a blender with some water. Blend it until it's pulverized. Now, throw in a magnet. Of course, this works best with those science-class magnetic plates, where you throw the magnet in and it rotates by itself, but the end result is the same: Pull the magnet out, and it'll be convered with fuzz. That fuzz is the iron. basically, cereal manufacturers add miniscule iron fillings to their product to increase the iron concentration. It's like saying you can overdoes on iron by swallowing a bike chain. Only about 20% of the iron in most of the cereals is digestible. So don't sweat that too much.

edit- whoops, i wrote high-protein, not iron-fortified.
