I recently heard that it's reported on the news in Chicgao that creatine causes cancer and they are going to make it a controlled substance in France. Does anyone know of this?

That looks like media propaganda simply to cause controversy. If anyone can find a study on PUBMED or MEDLINE showing creatine shows any link to cancer, I would be definately interested. Notice how the article stated that the French authorities said that creatine was useless?

"The report said potential risks associated with taking creatine were "currently insufficiently evaluated" and that the product was of little benefit to athletes hoping to improve their performance."

The intellect displayed in this article shows why France is a major power in the world.

That article seems odd, in it they state:

=========================================
The supplement is popular among pro and college athletes in the United States, where it is considered a legal alternative to steroids.
=========================================

I have lived in United States my whole life and I did not know we through creatine was an alternative to steroids.

Dang, I need to pay more attention.

Anyone hear anything more about this? The report kinda freaked me out, on account of I don't want to get cancer.

Yes, they were dumb to say it has no effect beyond 15 seconds, considering the average play in football takes less than that and the average baseball or golf swing takes one second.

But if it causes cancer, it causes cancer. I'd like to find out if there is any basis to this.

Interesting that no one here has any real scientific evidence. I'm sure someone on the board would have heard about it if there was?

From my experience, this type of story comes from a scientist saying something like "No one is sure of the long term use of Creatine..." (which we are not) ".. for all we know it COULD cause cancer"

Guys, come on! Let's be a little smarter about this. The article says that they have "linked the popular training supplement creatine to a potential cancer risk". This statement means absolutely nothing. French fries are a potential cancer risk. There is no way they're gonna ban creatine, it's food(1 lbs of beef has 3 grams of creatine). If they ban creatine they might as well ban butter; it's more of a health risk.

Bro Rancid you took the words right out of my mouth. EVERYTHING CAUSES CANCER! well just about everything. From toothpaste, to shampoo, to hairspray, even food. A lot of hidden material out there a lot of folks don't know about.

Dude it's very, very possible, gamma-hydroxybutraicacid (sp?) GHB is present in EVERY CELL IN THE HUMAN BODY. AND!!! there is 1.5 mg of GHB in 1lb of beef and GHB is schedule I meaning that the entire meat industry in the U.S. is the #1 distributor of narcotics in this country, and your body, everyone all 300 some million of us are illegal drugs (sched I states that any quanity is punishable...)

Valdez, I never said it was not possible. The point I was trying to make was that creatine is no better or no worse then other foods. If you abuse almost anything there are going to be side effects. It's incredibly hypocritical on their part to try to ban it: isn't tobacco or alcohol far worse? Of course those industries have more influence on the government.

GHB is a whole different issue. It was banned because of a bunch of idiots used it with beer. If you look around your home, you'll probably find something than can really fuck you up. Example: Robitussion Pm(sp). And 1.5 mg of GHB in 1 lb of beef is an insignificant amount.

Did you know that if you swallow too much of your own saliva you can get cancer?
If creatine causes cancer then so does beef, which means hamburgers cause cancer, which therefore means that McDonald's causes cancer, those damn murderous bastards. You ask anyone who has ever had cancer if they've ever eaten at McDonald's. Guess we know the truth now.

well lettuce contains a very powerful carcinogen. so does coffee.

point is they are in very low concentrations so there is no noticalble effect. in meat creatine is in such low conc. it won't do that much. a diet high in red meats such as beef has been shown to increase the risk of cancer.

pont is creatine is in very high concentrations when taken powdered. [B]but[/B} the french weren't to specific (or the media wasn't) when they said 'it could increase the risk of cancer'. they really need to be more specific. and FRANCE! they banned it. get an independant testing done. how it causes the cancer, how much it multiplies the risk, quantities etc.
