Yes, it's true that Vitamin C reduces cortisol levels...but that's only half the story. So far what we know about vitamin C is that it reduces cortisol by improving recovery time by way of lactic acid reduction. However, pretty soon afterwards (regardless of scheduling of vitamin C supplementation) cortisol levels return to normal. Don't forget, cortisol, although not vital to life, is a very important hormone for recovery from stress. Without sufficient cortisol, you and I wouldn't be able to cope with physical or mental stresses without having major illnesses. If you want to reduce cortisol levels in order to reduce post workout soreness that's fine...but don't take it to stop all cortisone production...that wouldn't be healthy. Hope that helps. | ||

Yes, the study you're talking about was done about 5 years ago on Olympic level athletes, and it does cause a temporary reduction. There is no data saying that vitamin C has any bad effects on the human body, even at 10+ grams a day. I usually use about 2 grams a day, 3 on heavy workout days, and have had no problems. When I feel like a cold is coming along, I take up to 10 grams a day. Just make sure you space it apart and drink plenty of water. Vitamin C normaly keeps in the body for about 2 to 4 hours max. |
