I am a baseball player who works extremely hard to gain muscle and strength in the off-season and I was wondering if nicotine had any bad effects on muscle growth or exercise for that matter? I don't smoke but I chew tobacco year round and I was curious if anyone had any info or opinions?

No bad effects other than mouth and/or throat cancer then death. Not trying to be sarcastic- I used to work out and then go out partying all night. After awhile you realize it makes no sense to devote so much time, energy, and money into your passion and then turn around and tear it down.Do yourself a favor and quit bro-the effects of even something as seemingly innocent as dip can be devastating!

tobacco products are an irrational way of consuming a potentially beneficial drug. nicotine patches used moderatley during ketosis along with diruetics (sp) will allow you to go even lower in bodyfat (3-4%) than otherwise possible. do internet searches, I have no experience with this but psychology class, and some articles on the net have convinced me. chew is somewhat ok to do occasionally, there is no excuse for anyone to smoke. basically what I'm trying to say is that a little chew will not affect muscle gains.

I just wanted to add that I don't chew tobacco for any reason other than the fact that I am addicted. I don't want benefits, I'm looking for more reasons to quit other than the fact that that it eats your face away and kills you. That should be enough reason by itself. Hey Bleedo, you make a good point and I agree with you 100%. Thanks for the replies.

doing ANYTHING under the pretence of being addicted is an excuse used by the weak of will. I have gone through withdrawals (from nicotine, alcohol.) they are an EXCUSE!! if you don't enjoy a thing do not do a "thing" as my quote reads (and as I believe) "FEAR IS THE MINDKILLER, THE LITTLE DEATH THAT BRINGS TOTAL OBLITERATION, YOU WILL FACE YOUR FEAR, IT WILL PASS OVER YOU, AND THROUGH YOU, WHEN IT HAS GONE AND PAST ONLY YOU WILL REMAIN ------------------

Pec, But apparently knowing what it can do to you is NOT reason enough for you to quite. Do you think if it effected muscle gains it would make you quite? I think not. ------------------

Maybe you guys don't understand addiction. I do. If you really want to quit you will eventually when you get sick and tired of it, and you can't do it anymore. Pray for help! I'm serious. Acceptance of your addiction, and the desire to stop is half the battle. Keep trying.

Someone just had to ask this question. That's okay because I am an okie too. I've been chewing since I was in Junior High (not trying to brag here). I am by no means a nicotine expert but I have read that it is thermogenic. Whether this is right I don't know. To my knowledge, and through my O-chem teachers explanation, nicotine is relatively safe and not bad for you. The minute you light it up with fire (eg. smoking), then this is when the harmful effects come into play. The lighted cigarette creates a cancerous reaction that is absorbed through breathing and through the skin. One thing I don't understand about this though is, if the toxic affect of a cigarette is due to it being lit, then why does chew give people mouth cancer when it is not lit. My teacher couldn't really explain this either. Maybe it is due to something else that is added into it. Hell I don't know. Anyway, I have never been addicted to chewing, and I don't fein for it if I run out. Call me lucky, I don't know, but I can quit it and not feel like I have to have it (addiction). One reason that i like chewing is that it relaxes me, which is cool, especially before I go to bed. Therefore, i don't like to chew it any time before a workout because of this reason.

you chew the rest of what you have and you never buy anymore or accept any more, that simple. notice I didn't say that easy but it is that simple. and yes I know what it is to be addicted to ciggarettes, cold turkey is the only way. |
