I made a mistake last night, I took 9 grams of timed release melatonin (3 pills) I took more with the thought that it would give a deep R.E.M. state and knock my ass to bed. well I got to bed fine, nothing unusual. but I kept waking up at 2 hour intervals and it was kinda hard to fall back asleep each time. I slept horribly. I usually use 1mg-3mg timed release 2-3 times per week. anyone else have any experience with melatonin? how much do you use, when? btw: studies are showing that melatonin is a good antioxidant. ------------------ quote: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I dont have any personal experience with melatonin but i know you're supposed to take around 1-5mg before sleep. It has shown to be non-toxic with doses 600 to 3000 times normal dosage. You mentioned you wanted to achieve deep sleep.Im no expert but i think REM isnt deep sleep. There are 4 stages of sleep stages 1-4(nrem) and REM sleep.During the night in around 90 minute intervals your brain goes through the stages reaching stage four then rising again until it enters REM sleep.Stage 4 is the deep sleep that is hard to wake from.REM is the stage where we dream.During that time your brain almost thinks its awake having very realistic dreams and reactions, along with irreguar brain patterns. The increased melatonin COULD somehow be influencing how your brain cycles through the stages making you wake around every 90-120 minutes. Its just a thought. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I take 3mg a night. Takes about 45 min for it take effect. Sometimes if I'm wide awake and need to get some rest I'll up the dosage to 6mg. I've never had a problem using it, and I've always slept like a baby while using it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I wouldn't take over 6 mg/night...try taking some kava kava, valerian root, zma, etc., with it if it seems to be losing effects...don't take it for more than like 8-10 weeks or your body will stop producing it and you won't be able to fall asleep without it... ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

your body produces melatonin naturally. so, you should not take it for prolonged period of time because when you come off it, you will have pporblems sleeping. also, you should take varying doses of it for one week and then go off, then back on for a week. you should never take more than 6 mg. at a time. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Do you all use prescription or over the counter? My girlfriends Dad is a Dr. and he writes me prescriptions for melatonin but is the stuff in health food stores the same, if so what health food stores? GNC? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

yeah in health food stores. GNC is lame and a little overpriced. I prefer the timed-release tabs. I usually take it with a homemade ZMA which is very cheap. let's me sleep in later. ------------------ quote: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
