I need answers, links to research, anything...what happens to this product, glycerin, when it is digested and becomes glycerol...how is it metbolized does it attract fatty acids and become a triglyceride??? PLEASE ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Glycerin is the same thing as glycerol. Glycerin does not turn into glycerol. This is how glycerol/glycerin is broken down when taken in: (All you Biochem people out there, correct me if I am wrong, but I think I am right). Glycerol is broken down by Glycerol Kinase into Glycerol-3-phosphate. After this, the glycerol-3-phosphate is broken by Free Fatty Acids and ATP into a triglyceride. Also, the Glycerol-3-phosphate can also be broken down into Dihydroxyacetone phosphate by the enzyme Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. After this, the Dihydroxyacteone phosphate is then broken down by Triose phosphate Isomerase to form Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. Now this is where most people overlook the metabolic pathway of glycerol. This being said, the Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate is broken down by glycolysis where it creates Pyruvate, AND it is also broken down through gluconeogenesis where Glucose is formed. So to answer your question, both glucose and pyruvate should be the final products. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

MR BMJ is correct. Glycerol can either be used to re-esterify free fatty acids into triglycerides, or enter glycolysis as glycerol-3-phosphate. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
