Ive been training for about a year now and im only 17. I started because i work with some great powerlifters, well in my opinion. One hit a 620 bench at 275 and the other just hit a 450 at 181. Anyway, when i first started off i was big into deadlifting, basically because my other lifts werent that good. I pulled 405 at 165 in my first contest and have only pulled in one other meet besides that one. I would really like to bench in the next contest i enter, providing i improve a great deal. My current bench press max is apporx. 265 at 181 lbs. I found an article in powerlifting usa by Larry Pacifico to add 44 pounds on your bench. My question is if this is an effective workout and if anybody has tried it. Its in the dec 99 mag i belive, thank you for your info.

Yes I used the article for about 3 weeks and I could definitely see it working. I switched from that to more of a modified Louis Simmons workout program ( I think it is more my style). Anyway, I think it will improve your bench a great deal if you follow it correctly. I don't know about 44lbs, but it is definitely a solid routine to follow. The thing about routines is the fact that they give you a solid base and something to follow. To each his own. After a couple more years of lifting experience you will develop a style of your own that fits you only. Just because it works for someone else does not mean it will work for you. Strokerjr

If any routine promises a certain poundage improvement, stay away from it....if it sounds too good to be true then it probably was!

I tried similar plans for bench workouts a few times. If you take creatine, protein, get 8 hours of sleep per night, don't do any cardio, and stay away from the alcohol and recreational drugs, then _maybe_ 30 lbs is realistic in an 8 week program. My success ranged from 10 lbs in 8 weeks to 25 lbs in 8 weeks... but never the 50 that they promise.

wo wo wow wo.......
"if any routine promises a certain poundage improvement, stay away from it"....WTF.
C'mon man, any PL routine relies on incremental, set poundage increases over time. Any well designed PL cycle SHOULD promise exact figures, whether as a percentage of current max, or in terms of actual poundage, or i would be wary of whether much thought had been put in to it at all. Ask any PL what he hopes to get out of a particular precontest cycle. None of them will say "to get stronger"...they will all have SPECIFIC goals in mind, ie poundage goals. Otherwise, you are fucked from the begining. I understand that one must be wary of outrageous " 50lbs on your bench in 34 seconds" type gatbage propagated by some of the scam merchants of our sport, but a sound routine SHOULD have poundage goals laid out from the start.
Cheers bros, G.

Never pay any attention to anything that makes exact pound increase promises. Most of the guys in PL USA don't do half of waht they put on paper. I know this cause I train with the guy on this month's cover. To many varibles come into play to make exact pound promises. THE TRUTH IS if you want to increase your bench make your week points stronger. I,ve seen the best benchers in the world and most of them get ALOT of help from their shirts. So learn to get all you can out of your shirt.

I mean they take their routine and add all sorts of crazy shit it. They'll throw in extra sets and the weight per set is heavier than what they really do. I've guys miss attempts at 495 in the warm up room without a bench shirt, then throw on a shirt and go hit 550 to 575 easy on their first attempt. Then they write these articles about how they can lift about the same with as without bench shirts, and they bench heavy two to three times a week and and they do all of these negatives and box presses; it just makes me sick. THe truth is if you bench really heavy twice a week for extended periods of time you WILL develope elbow and or shoulder problems. The body just can't handle that much stress. and if you bench twice a week and train your triceps seperate when is your body supposed to recover? The truth is that it can't. Forgive me I'm griping like a woman. ( I'm in between cycles and I feel really shitty.) Don't get me wrong, their are some really strong benchers out their, but I've seen them get beat someone who couldn't come within 10% of them raw, but has a good shirt and great technique.
Later.
