I'm interested in a food prep plan that I could use to prepare my 6 daily meals for the week. Its such a tedious task to prepare each meal one at a time, especially dinner. Cooking takes too long. Any suggestions on how to prepare a weekly food log & the food? Is it safe to store cooked meals for the week? There must be an easy way.

I precook all my food for the week...for example I will cook a batch of brown rice or barely, steam a bunch of brocolli or make a large marinated salad with carrot/green/beans etc. I will grill a bunch of chicken breasts as well and maybe cook up some lean hamburger patties or ground turkey breast. Then I will throw all of that together in the evenings to prepare for the next day adding in fresh greens and veggies and so on. I pretty much will eat the same thing for my various meals all week...occasionally I might have to cook up a bit more meat or steam some more veggies depending on how much I've eaten. I've found that steamed veggies usually are good for 3 days, the chicken and beef about 5, fresh veggies 6. I also buy low sodium canned beans for variety in the carb dept. Since I am out the door at 5am I have to pack every one of my meals with me and I've gotten pretty good at it. Oatmeal in a baggie to cook at work...tupperwear is a good investment for me...and a big cooler. That way I can throw together my rice, fresh zuch, tomato, chicken and top it with salsa and flax oil and I'm good to go. (for one meal anyway) Pre chopping your fresh veggies saves time too. For my food log I use a small spiral bound notebook...make up meals 1-6 (well 1-8 for me) and then pretty much stick to that plan for the week. I also use dietwatch.com to log my food so I can be sure I am targeting my nutrients correctly. They also allow you to add foods to their already large index so if you use meal replacements or protein powders you can enter the info specifically. I do cook fresh food for dinner though..I've become an expert at making dinners in 20min or less...lol. Hope this helps some. ------------------

Thanks...I'm going to prep my my food on the weekend and I'm definitely using dietwatch.com. Is it ok/safe to store egg whites & cooked oatmeal for a few days?

cooked grains should last for about 5 days...cooked egg white I'm not sure. My guess would be 3 or so days. But eggs are easy to cook - I take my eggs to work and cook them in the micro. Not as good as in the pan but it works. he he he...make sure you cook the egg in a micro safe bowl...not the shell...lol...or BOOM. ------------------

lol skydancer..dont wanna do that. I live off tuna fish sandwiches. What I like to do is buy 8 cans of tuna, a jar of low fat mayo and 2 loafs of whole wheat bread. Mixing 8 cans with a jar of mayo is a bitch though. I make a bunch of sandwiches and then put them in those glad plastic containers and im set for a few days. ------------------

NY - Do you chop up veggies in your tuna? Thats what I do - celery, carrot, green onion maybe a dash of dill...makes it taste very good, plus you get some veg matter too!! ------------------

Hook it up with non-fat mayo or mustard, diced onions, green peppers, celery and sprinkle some black pepper on it. Tastes just like chicken salad! Or you can fry it with some egg whites till cooked well, spice it up and throw a slice or two of non-fat cheese & let it melt...one of my favorites! |
