All I know is that if they work, they only work on starch; that is polysacharides, not mono or disacharides. IP: Logged |

I don't know if they work, it's probbably one of those BS magic pill schemes that lets you eat what you want without gainning weight yea right. It's on the shelf right next to the "intense workout in a bottle" that gives you muscle gains without lifting. Just try to clean up your diet and eat good moderate amount of carbs.Personally I would want to take something that blocks any absorbtion in my body. IP: Logged |

They're b.s. completely. The reason is because phaseolamin (derived from northern white kidney beans)is an amino acid and although it does bind to carbs in the stomach, is eventually broken down itself in the small intestine...which then results in the release of the "bound" carbohydrates---which are then digested normally. The only carb blocker that has any chance of preventing the storage of carbs as fats is alpha lipoic acid. It acts like insulin and allows the movement of carbs into muscles for use as energy rather than being stored as fat. Other potential carb blockers are gymnema sylvestra tea, possibly chromium and vanadyl sulfate if used long-term. But none of them are as good as alpha lipoic acid. IP: Logged |

I use ALA in huge ammounts when I carb on weekends, and it's one of the few supplements that has a truly noticable effect on carb metabolism. Personally, I think you'd be better of using Citrimax which furthers the potential of glycogen storage as well as suppress apetite, together with ALA which is the best glucose disposal agent around, rather than the so-called carb blockers. BACKDOC, your explanation of how Phaseolamin works is incorrect. It does not bind to the carbs, but to alpha-amylase, the enzyme which breaks various polysaccharides into monomers. By blocking amylase activity, you prevent stach digestion and absorption(how much I do not know). You are correct that Phaseolamin is a protein, and may undergo digestion itself, but this does not mean that the carbs will then be digested and absorbed, since nutrient digestion and assimilation are affected by the area of the GI that they are in. So possibly by inhibiting it at certain areas of the GI will allow for escape of digestion. Now to get to the good stuff. Studies have shown that kidney bean extract DOES inhibit alpha-amylase and carb digestion, BUT it can inhibit protein digestion also. One study showed (in high doses, mind you) that Phaseolamin inhibited food digestion so much that the rats died from undigested boluses of food that blocked and ruptured their intestines. In other studies, kidney bean extract has been shown to contain certain mitogenic lectins (read: stimulate cell growth/division) that increase intestinal size and stimulates E. coli populations. So does kidney bean extract have use? I am not sure. It certainly does have some nasty potential side effects, but are these only seen at very high doses? BACKDOC mentioned some good alternatives, namely gymnema sylvestra, which has some metformin-like activity on the absorption of glucose (and fat) by the intestines. Combined with alpha-lipoate or Laegerstremia (Glucosol) it may be a great metformin alternative. IP: Logged |
