The reason I have cheat days is so I don't lose my mind. You may not feel this way after 10 days of dieting, but may be able to appreciate it after many weeks of strict dieting. The other reason is to kick start your metabolism. The body can get used to anything after a while and the cheat day sort of shocks your metabolism back into action. Just an aside, but you may not want to eat pure junk all day for your cheat day. For me, that is too much of a shock for my body and could practically put me into a coma with what it does to my blood sugar. I'm very carb sensitive, so I learned to do mostly fats (some carbs) on my cheat days. It helps my muscles fill up nicely and satisfies my cheat urge wihtout driving my blood sugar into the stratosphere. Gotta figure out what works for you, but definitely DO have planned cheat days.

To keep your sanity.
To keep your metabolism guessing.

I love that metabolism excuse - use it every time! In actuality, you can easily keep your metabolism guessing by altering calories and nutrients while still eating clean. Technically, cheating is not required physiologically, but unless you are a robot, cheating is definately required psychologically - at least for me it is. No diet works unless you stick with it and who is going to stick with a diet that leaves no room for freedom. If anyone can, more power to you, just eat more clean calories once a week and your metabolism will stay up. Me, I'll keep my Breyer's ice cream handy on the weekend.

There is no dispute that cycling your calories and nutrients up and down throughout a diet will keep your metabolism chugging along burning fat and you will achieve the desired results with clean food. But, when I eat a cheeseburger and fries suddenly, it has a greater impact on my metabolism. This is my experience with my body, so it's not up for dispute.

I just don't understand how someone could go for much longer than a week without having the freedom to eat what you really want; I would do it regardless of metabolism.

Well, yes, absolutely! That is why my very first response was that I do it "not to lose my mind" - total honesty. Secondary reason given was for metabolism. (That was order of importance to me.)

Same with me, though unfortunately, unlike you, I have never seen any real physical benefit to my cheat day (that's why the metabolism thing is just an excuse in my case). Nevertheless, the psychological benefit is huge. The mental well-being associated with long-term, disciplined bodybuilding and fitness must not be overlooked. We take so much time to make sure our bodies are fit and healthy, we sometimes overlook that we're people like everyone else and have to sometimes indulge, just use moderation and reason when we do. So to anyone who doesn't cheat, either you're lying, or you've got some out-of-this-world genetics!

carbs and fats aren't the only reason for a cheat day boys. A cheat day and a high carb day are completly different things, the point of a cheat day is to blitz the body not only with fat but sodium, this day of high sodium will help flush out the sodium you got in you.

Hmmm. I always thought a sudden increase in sodium intake caused you to retain rather than flush, unless it was compensated with an equally large increse in water, which does the actual flushing.

From reading the post, you can see that we HAVE differentiated between a cheat day (cheesburger, fries) and manipulation of calories, etc. so that's a foregone conclusion. V's opinion is that you can achieve the same result with both methods. Just wanted to clarify that. True, the sodium blitz idea is part of the cheat day...chances are very good that the foods you are eating will have plenty of sodium compared to what you have been eating. So, this will shock your body, but this does not flush sodium out of your body. Your body will try to hold on to the sodium as it perceives there has been a shortage. I experience water retention after the cheat day unless it is combined with proper water, potassium, and sodium balance. But, then we are talking about contest prep, which is a different thing because you wouldn't be doing the cheat day in your final week when you are concerned with sodium intake.

I too have a cheat day, one day a week, for basically all the reasons desribed above. Once you get over your guilt feeling it is well worth it. It also makes the other days of strict dieting managable.

I also experience water retention the day after and sometimes on the same day as my cheat. Junk food has so much sodium, I'm not sure drinking any ammount of water could flush it - I think that's why pros must be extremely careful with what they take in before a contest. Not because of calories, because they increase those through carb loading anyway, but because of sodium.

Loading up on carbs will reset your metabolism so you dont get burned out. I love the metabolism excuse because its right.
