I know this question is asked way too frequently but I will take the flames I get with dignity Iam 5'5"(no short jokes please) 170lbs, 8% bodyfat and currently taking in 2000cals a day(dieting), going to increase to 2500 next week. When I start to bulk up again at the end of the summer how much should I take in? I was thinking 3000, my current caloric needs are 2800 to maintain. Should I increase to more than 3000...I know that I will gain fat and it is inevitable, but I dont want to be a fuckin balloon. Thanx bro's

my opinion, if your bulking you should take in at least 3,300 calories at THE LEAST. that would be a nice 1lb a week..

Try increasing to something like 300-500 above maintenance on training days, and just maintain on days off, plus throw in a cheat meal once a week. You'll be less likely to store fat by mixing up your calorie intake from day to day, as this keeps your metabolism racing. Just as long as they're quality calories.

Dear god! Please don't tell me you're serious! Fast food? Maybe once a week. Plenty of "burgers burgers burgers" if you want to bulk around your waist line! Plenty of chicken, chicken, oatmeal, oatmeal if you want to bulk in the right places!

why the fuck do people think you cant get fat off oatmeal and chicken, its food not a drug if youre eating above maintanace calories youre gonna get it in the waist regardless, so if youre gonna bulk you might as well enjoy it...who wants to eat oatmeal and chicken everyday..and as far as tricking your metabolism why would you want to do that on a bulking phase. that part is for the diet..
when im bulking mcdonalds is my best friend..dont be fooled by flex mag
the pros eat fast food all the time....its good shit for growing...

there is more to bulking than eating fast food everyday. you can bulk, or you can bulk intelligently.

I never said you won't put on bodyfat from eating chicken and oatmeal. A calorie surplus of any kind resuls in weight gain. Any weight gain, from a bodybuilding point of view, always means BOTH fat and muscle. My point is that by overeating on nutrient-dense foods, more of those calories will be utilized for muscle repair and fewer will be stored as body fat. The saturated fat in a McDonald's burger can't be used by your muscles, but it sure as hell can be stored by your fat cells. Same thing with the refined carbohydrates of those greasy white-bread, high glycemic index buns they use. So if you eat 500 calories worth of Big Mac, a smaller percentage of those calories would be used by your muscles and a greater percentage would be stored as fat, since muscle is neither fueled nor built by grease (unless you are in ketosis). Thus the term 'empty calories' - empty meaning your muscles have no way to make use of them. If on the other hand, you eat 500 calories worth of oatmeal and lean chicken, your muscles will use the majority of the complex carbohydrate for fuel, and probaly all of the protein for repair. Yes, you will inevitably overeat to a small degree and store some fat from that surplus, but there will be a smaller percentage of calories that are stored since so many are utilized by the muscles. As for what the pros eat, well who gives a shit! They are all genetically gifted and many are not natural and thus can get away with it. Besides, they pay for it anyway by having to strictly diet for 16 weeks before contest. Even while bulking, it makes no sense for the genetically average person to let their body fat percentage drift far into the double digits. They will inevitable want to shed that fat at some point and will have to diet too long and too strict, loosing hard-earned muscle. The off-season demands just as much discipline as contest time.

very well put vlav,i still believe you should eat any way you wish in the offseason actually mcdonalds has alot of good protien in the burgers and chicken.i do agree on the genetics aspect of the sport if you dont posses great genetics bodybuilding will be very difficult to achieve your goals and even harder to maintain...and as far as pros dieting hard for contests, its crap theyve got drugs to take care of them..
ps.. all the pros juice all the amatures juice and most of the natural competitors juice as well..there are no drug testing its all lies drug test are expensive and promoters arent going to lose profit from them...

The best rule of thumb I know is that if you take lots of 'repartitioning agents', then eat as much as you can to bulk. Anything will do so long as you're not worried about the high salt/blood pressure associated with junk food. If your not juiced (although sour jerk doesn't believe such a thing exsists in bodybuilding) then vlaovic's plan will get you more muscle to fat. Increase calories slowly until you're gaining around a pound a week on good, clean fuel with junk food as needed to stay sane and have a social life.

Hey everyone needs some junkfood to keep from feeling like a robot, as long as it's not the foundation of your diet. P.S. sour jerk, what you say about the pros gives us all the more reason to do what works for US not THEM.

Your wright people do need to stay saine while dieting. But that does not meat eating burgerking all day.
I think MS is saying its done to stay saine and keep feeling good about your self. That it should not be done for the major caloric intake.
