![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Is this shit a carb or what? I am trying to get ripped, limiting my carbs, so for a little energy in the morning at work I started eating a Pure protein bar, peanut butter flavor instead of a protein shake, now one of my bros is telling me although it says 9 carbs it is actually closer to 30 due to the glycerine. Anyone? ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's a sugar-alcohol with around 7 calories per gram. The problem is, most of these MRP's don't tell you how many grams of glycerine are in a bar. Sometimes you can figure it out by adding up protein+carb+fat calories and subtracting it from total calories. That only works if they tell the truth about total cals on the label! ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I did that, also on the bar it says glycerine has a caloric value of 4.32 grams, where did you come up with 7? I guess, suffice to say, I really wanted to eat as clean as possible I should do without it. ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As a sugar alcohol, the companies do not count it is a real carb. What is the deal with it? How does the body use it? I am going to do a little research, and post my findings to the board. I am sure it will be useful for some of you guys. Thanks, Joe ------------------ "You think that is PAIN?!?! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oops. 4 grams is correct. And a lot of the glycerol will be converted to glucose, although on a fat-loss diet some of it will also be used to help circulate fatty acids (in the form of triglycerides). Suffice it to say that you should count glycerol/glycerine as a carbohydrate. You're lucky they mentioned it in the nutritional info. Many companies don't bother. ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That sucks, it puts me over the limit, I will have to adjust my diet now. Hey MS you seem to know your shit, if you were trying to get ripped, would you eat one of these a day as long as it fit into your carb intake numbers for the day, that is with counting the glycerine as a carb? ------------------ DECA-IT'S WHAT'S FOR DINNER [This message has been edited by Decaman (edited July 05, 2000).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() By the way it says it has a low glycemic index, does that mean although it is a carb, it dosen't affect your blood sugar or insulin levels? ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Personally I would avoid processed food as much as I can pre-competition/photo shoot, except for the day of the comp/photo shoot when some simple sugars will help fill out your muscles and vascularity. I'm not sure exactly what's in a pure protein bar other than protein and glycerine so I can't comment on that particular brand. But they sound like they would be good to eat a few of them during your carb-loading phase since the glycerine will help pull water out from under the skin and into the blood stream (helps to dehydrate the skin while making you look more vascular). As far as glycemic index, glycerine should have almost no impact since it has to go through a conversion to be used as glucose. This conversion takes time, sorta like the impact of extra protein on your blood sugar. The excess protein/glycerine can eventually convert to glucose, but it's a slow, drip-feed effect. ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hey DecaMan....That's pretty ironic because I was doing the same axact diet last summer (1 peanut butter Pure Protien bar, first thing in the morning) followed by 5 other small meals throughout the day. But the only carb intake I was getting was from the bar. The rest was high protien (180-220 grams per day), and mid fat (20-40 grams mostly from flax seed oil). Any how the point is I still got very lean so the bar didn't effect my state of ketosis. Altough now I am more strict so I just stick with the shakes... If you want to see pictures of me last summer, just check out the hobbies section of my web page. Click on the bodybuilding section and look at summer of '99. The pic at top right in red shorts shows my abs (the first time ever seeing then after that diet.) html version---> http://www.geocities.com/richmaffei/pages/home.html flash version---> http://www.geocities.com/richmaffei/index.html IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are on a ketosis diet, I recommend you stay far away from those bars, but if you are on a non-ketosis low carb diet, they won't hurt you, just make sure to take the glyc calories into account. Also, you don't really have to count them as carb calories, because the stuff is so low-GI it does not have much of an effect on blood sugar (sort of like vegetables which have carb calories, but won't affect blood sugar).
