I've made great gains in fat loss and muscle by eating just unsaturated fat, lots of protein and moderate carbs. I've recently started using Pure Protein bars which have 3 to 4 grams of SATURATED fat (34 grams of protein and 13 carbs). What do you guys think about that much saturated fat twice a day for someone trying to go from 10% to 7% body fat. If it was unsaturated fat I wouldn't have a problem, but i've heard over and over again to stay away from the saturated stuff? What do you think? Is it really that bad?

If the saturated fat is in the from of Medium chain triglycerides, which are in Metrx Protein Plus and Pure Protein bars, then it's actually good. MCT's are easily converted to energy and have very lttle chance of being stored as body fat. A lot of companies are switching to this method now. It does freak a lot of people out when they see that the bar contains 8 grams of saturated fat.

Actually, if you don't have heart problems or if you are not obese, then you don't need to worry about saturated fat any more than you would regular fat. Saturated fat is vital to life and is part of the process in the formation of necessary hormones, as well as to help keep cell membranes flexible. The media hype concerning saturated fat has been grossly misdirected at the normal public in general. Yet some of these same people push medications that create arteriosclerosis/atherosclerosis. The fats that we all need to avoid completely are what's called trans fatty acids---such as those found in margerine---which are not healthy in the least. In fact, in the process of making margerine in the factory, if they heated the solution to 10 degrees higher for just a few extra seconds the margerine would form into plastic! Not exactly my idea of a healthy thing. At any rate, margerine and other trans fatty acids create many many free radicals and are generally hard to deal with by the body. This has a much heavier implication in vessel damage than saturated fats.
Bottom line, saturated fats are not a problem if you don't have a history of heart disease or are not obese. If you need some references to back this up, I'll go dig them up for you.
I hope that helps.
